244055 2004-06-13 08:34:00 Just Lately we have been having trouble booting up our XP computer. It goes thro the start up until it gets to the Login selection of user name & password, then locks up. Not possible to type in the password, nothing happens. Occasionally it will be ok with the restart button, more successful hitting the off/onn button. Now & again have to turn the power off at the wall & restart.

Just started happening is a black screen at the beginning of boot up. Error message is "window root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe" other advise is to reload this file.

So what does it mean, what has happened. How do I reload this file, I assume off the XP CD,yes? Thanks for any help in simple English. PJ

244056 2004-06-13 08:50:00 One solution that I have just read is that you need to clean the dust from your computer and keyboard socket. :-)

May as well begin with the simple things first, so turn your computer off and give it a tickle with a clean paintbrush or similar. Even better, give it a blast with a can of compressed air around the sockets but NOT the vacuum cleaner unless you want to risk a bit of static causing a permanent kind of bootup trouble.

Hopefully that is all it needs but if that doesn't work let us know.

244059 2004-06-13 09:36:00 You can just reload the file from the XP cd using the system restore function (It's just a command line). Growly (6)

244062 2004-06-13 10:33:00 OK, this is what I found, ot sure I understand too much what step 5 and 6 mean

If you get an error that NTOSKRNL not found:

1. Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2. At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4. Change to the drive that has the CD ROM.
5. CD i386
6. expand ntkrnlmp.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe
7. If WindowsXP is installed in a different location, just make the necessary change to C:\Windows
8. Take out the CD ROM and type exit

8. Take out the CD Rom and type exit.

244063 2004-06-17 05:19:00 Back to this again!!!!!!!

Did as susan suggested. Remove each plug & check. Replace & wiggle to clean contacts. No better. Put 98keyboard on XP & XP kb on 98. Both computers ok. Did this to see if any keys were dodgy. Put them back again & still ok.

Also did an XP disc re-install.

Now the next bit. I have "lost" the printer. Cables ok. Keeps coming up with "communications error" I assume this is due to the re install. So, I deleted the Canon & Epson printers & Re installed from the discs. Neither will work, what have I done. Canon i550 & Epson Stylus C20ux.
This lot is supposed to be "plug & play" but it won't find a printer. What should I do please. PJ
