244421 2004-06-15 03:07:00 lovelee: The only file you are wanting to delete entries from is the Hosts file. Not hosts.sam, hosts.cab or anything like that, just plain vanilla Hosts with no extension. Don't worry about the others.

Metla: I agree that too many cooks spoil the broth but if you can suggest a much better tactic than I then please do so. Your experience is vastly more superior than mine and at the moment I am not 100% certain that lovelee's problem is the same as what I have dealt with a few times recently. I have to wait and see what results she reports back but you are most welcome to jump in if you have better ideas. ;-)

lovelee: Have a go at running AVG in safe mode. To get into safe mode reboot your computer and tap the F8 key as soon as it starts booting until you get a menu from which to choose safe mode.

And please advise what version of Windows you are running.

Leave that one.

Is that the plain vanilla Hosts file? If so.... BINGO!

Yes, delete all that stuff except the line 127.0.0.1 localhost. ;-)

244426 2004-06-15 04:33:00 Well Im a lil tongue tied now ..

In attemppting to open AVG it came up with an error which wasnt showing before .. saying **Driver(CORE) not found winerr=2**

So I went to add remove .. and it would appear it would allow me to uninstall it .. though not of course run it.

I decided to ask you first .. should I uninstall it ? .. (it attempted to recover itself .. but alas that was undoable too .. so uninstall AVG and download it again ?? Is that the next move .. or uninstall it and see if I can do a housecall b4 downloading it again ??

Your doing good Susan .. dont stop now .. (F)

244427 2004-06-15 04:40:00 OK, it wouldn't hurt to uninstall AVG and download a fresh version . Make sure you update the new copy before running it (if it will run . . . . ) . After uninstalling, delete anything remaining in the Program Files if there is anything there .

Otherwise, give the Trend AV site a go, as a last resort because that is quite slow .

244429 2004-06-15 09:14:00 Right..... it looks like you have what I thought you might have. :-(

OK, download Stinger (vil.nai.com), HijackThis (www.spychecker.com) and CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller removal tool (www.spywareinfo.com) (the second item on that page, ie under the section "CWShredder or HijackThis closes immediately after opening?").

Now, these programs might also disappear in a flash when you try to run them so you're going to have to try the CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller removal tool first. After you have done that give Stinger a run and then HijackThis.

I have given instructions for HijackThis further up the page so follow them and let us know how you go.

NOTE: If HJT disappears on you you are going to have to be very quick in grabbing the logfile before HJT closes on you. We will probably really really need that file to get rid of what you have got so you might have to run HJT a dozen or more times to get that logfile. I just hope you have a rather slow computer....... ;-)
