244483 2004-06-14 22:05:00 Hi there,

I'm about to get an USB IrDA 1.1 receiver, but was hoping someone could explain to me the difference between this and a 1.3 version.

I assume it's simply speed or something. The IrDA 1.1 claims it is compatible with "FIR 4 Mbps, MIR, SIR and ASK 56 Kbps" while the 1.3 claims "IR data rates from 2.4K to 115.2Kbps (SIR Mode), 576K to 1.152Mbps (MIR MOde) & 4Mbps (FIR Mode)".

To me they seem to be the same....
Any help would be much appreciated,
Cheers,
Jonathan.

244484 2004-06-15 02:36:00 The IrDA 1.1 and irDA 1.3 are the "physical layer"specifications. HP, who make the interface parts, don't recommend 1.1 devices for "new designs". They both seem to handle up to the 4Mbps speed. I can't see any obvious difference without going to the www.irda.org and looking at the standards. ("irda 1.1"and "irda 1.3" to Google will get you started).

I've found irDA an "interesting" experience. @#$$%%^#$@ :_|

It seems to be OK if you are using only one external device. If you use a PalmPilot, and get lucky with a connection, you would be extermely fortunate to use a Pocket PC immediately afterwards. ;-)

I'm soon to be getting a Nokia phone which has IR capabilities.

Do you think I keep with my IrDA 1.1 or chuck in the extra money for 1.3? I haven't yet purchased the 1.1. But I doubt the Nokia is hardly picky about which it prefers.

I'm interested in hearing more about your experiences with IrDA - I'm a complete newcomer to it.

Cheers,
Jonathan.
