244968 2004-06-17 05:09:00 Hmmm..... just received an email from the Postmaster cyf.govt.nz saying "Your mail message could not be delivered, or may have encountered some trouble in the delivery process" along with a huge list of names of people at cyf.govt.nz whom I have never heard of.

Have never had any dealings with anyone CYF. :O

Tsk tsk. :D

244973 2004-06-21 23:25:00 For the last week or two I have been receiving a daily batch of 40 identical emails, each set from the same spoofed address . All in German . The topic and content varies between each batch .

The latest had the heading "Libanesen in Berlin" . Not sure of the rest, they are deleted as soon as I see them . Some are one line with a link, others run to a paragraph or more .

No point in bouncing them as the addresses are obviously spoofed .

Yesterday's Herald has an article entitled Computer spam becomes sinister ( . nzherald . co . nz/storydisplay . cfm?thesection=news&thesubsection=&storyID=3573773" target="_blank">www . nzherald . co . nz) . It contains the following:

"Spam has become a means of peddling dark political messages and can go hand in hand with viruses .

. . . .

Last week, computers in New Zealand and around the world were inundated with email bearing racist messages or links to websites such as the right-wing German National Party .

The attack of most concern to computer security experts has come from Hungary . In these cases, the spam has been generated by viruses and worms .

Emails arrive in an inbox and infect a machine, and in some cases use the victim's list of addresses to further spread the infection - and the unwanted message . "

Not reading German I don't know if the emails are spreading dark political messages or not . Nortons is up-to-date and it hasn't triggered an alert .

Is this a virus or just some fool thinking that if they send 40 spam messages then they have a higher chance of being read?

Can't find anything on the Symantec site - possibly using the wrong keywords - and this thread is the most logical one that came up here .

Any ideas?
