| 244887 | 2004-06-18 01:38:00 | Is that NAV I see in your start up? Could it be checking or attempting to check your boot sector and reporting the results once you have a GUI. Cheers Murray P |

| 244888 | 2004-06-18 07:08:00 | I used to see something similar on my PC (XP Pro, no network, no worms or viruses) and I can't really remember what I did to fix it cos it doesn't happen anymore. Altho' from memory mine was at startup and I think once I disabled my network card (don't need it) the problem stopped. This page will give you the PC boot process : www.qvctc.commnet.edu (BTW how do you guys convert the URL into a link? I'm new at this...) Just over half way down it says : "If the selected operating system is XP, NTLDR will continue the boot process by locating and loading the DOS based NTDETECT.COM program to perform hardware detection" My gut feel is this is an XP DOS process looking for a network or something similar - I don't believe it is anything sinister. If you try disabling your network card (Right Click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, network adapters, right click on your NIC description and disable) - see what happens given you don't have a network (unless you are using the NIC for an ADSL router). If this stops it cool, but you will need your NIC if you get into home networking. If this doesn't solve the problem then re-enable the network card by using the same instructions above. Somtehing else to try is to check out all of the other networking processes running behind the scenes. You can get to these through Right Click My Computer, Manage, Services and Applications, Services. Here you will find a bucketful of network tasks that start up when XP starts. Although I do warn you not to turn off too much stuff unless you are familiar with it - a little too much tinkering has an ever-widening circle effect :-D Hope this helps! |

| 244890 | 2004-06-18 09:32:00 | Firstly: Thank you to all the people putting their brain power and knowledge to work for me! Secondly: I think it may have been fixed, as I have not seen it come up tonight (so far). And in answer to your questions: > If there is a app running at start up (or whatever) or being run by something else ifor a brief period, you would be lucky to catch it in your processes list. You could try cheaking, and ticking off one by one the settings, preferences, options, etc, of your app's starting with the most likely first, could be some software around to do this like Xsetup bur if it misses one....... Ok, I think the easiest way would be to tell you the apps I have running (normally), so here's a list. - AVG. - MSN messenger. - Tiny Personal Firewall. - Web Browser (usually IE, but sometimes Firefox). > MS Indexing service or Find Fast hanging about BTW? Nope. > Not reinstalled with a patch? checked it? Yup, it's off. > Have you cleaned out the registry after the malaware checks. Might be something lingering as it does seem to be that sort of suss activity. No, but I really don't know how to go about this. andrew93 : No network card. (Thanks for explaining all that though, I can see you put a lot of time an effort in, for lil old me :D, so thanks man). > I have been playing with one today that Jester supplied a link to and its very good and fast. Its called HoverSnap.Definitely the quickest, and easiest I,ve used.A very small d/load. | 244891 | 2004-06-18 09:52:00 | Hope you get it sorted soon. Andrew, next time you reply in a thread go the Formatting Options link (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) at the top right of the text box you type into. It has instructions on how to link url's (if you post a long one it will break the formatting on the thread so, linking is better), make bold font, etc, or better still have a look at the link above.
