The 9600 and 9800 are both better chips than the 9200, which is a budget-level chip. The 9600 is a mid-range chip, and the 9800 is top of the range.

You've also got to bring in differences with the speed of the memory - if both cards were AGP, 9800s, one with less memory that ran faster would be preferrable to one with more memory that ran slower.

I also seem to remember somewhere that PCI graphics cards roughly match their AGP equivalents with half the amount of memory.

The difference is that the ti where the best cards on the market at the time,ATI then spanked them silly with the 9500/9700pro line of cards,In retaliation Nvidia released the fx series, that in most price ranges where up to 15 percent slower then the Ti series they replaced.

Only the top of the line cards were able to compete with ati,and even then ati cards were/are better performers in each budget range.

This is why nvidia made so many revisions to the model line in order to compete.

Hence we had the 5600 xt/normal/ultra,which was quickly replaced by the 5700,happened right across the range.

244831 2004-06-15 10:46:00 oh,and i might add that in order for nvidia to get their fx cards to compete with ATI they ramped the speed up so high they overheated, which required oversized coolers, which made the cards big, bulky and loud.

Poor show all round.

now what do you mean by market? would it perhaps just maybe include a Paradise 88 ISA Video card with 512KB Ram on trademe?

Ha ha LOL

Please note this card does exist, I have one LOL

244833 2004-06-15 12:18:00 Did you know some guy in Wanganui is putting together a Computer Muesem?

He's taking donations.:p

Infact it may be a worthwhile resting place for gear im sure a lot of forum users may have.

Can't say i know the guy,so i cant vouch for him,Hopefully he's not wasting peoples time and will one day put em on display.

244834 2004-06-15 20:45:00 So in retrospect, the 9800 would whip the pants of the 9200 or 9600 in the performance of "high graphic games"

AGP port itself is faster than PCI, so you could say the PCI cards are "bottlenecked"

244835 2004-06-15 22:11:00 The amount of memory in the high end graphics cards only makes a difference when you start playing at high resolutions with all the quality settings turned up. The difference in the frame rates (in Unreal Tournament 2003) between a 9800Pro 128MB and the 256MB version is virtually nil at 1024x768. However when you start getting up to 1600x1200 with full antialiasing then there is a difference of about 7 frames per second. Again stuff all difference and you probably only ever notice it on benchmarks. Sb0h (3744)
