2004-06-16 21:06:00 | The free ones , and they are suprisingly just as effective as pay versions are :- 1/ AVG free (www.grisoft.com) which scans e-mail and is used by a large number of people now. 2/ Avast Home (www.avast.com) which also scans email as well.

2004-06-16 21:15:00 | I'll let you know how I get on once I install them and test them on some sites. Hi Murray,is there somewhere you go to check that these programs work, online? Thanks.

2004-06-16 21:47:00 | Ive used ClamWin, Its not bad.. Very simlpe interface, to the point. Update files are usually pretty small (Daily) I dont like the sound of bitdefend not having real-time protection.. Seems kinda sad to "Board up the windows on your house, but leave the front door open and stand in the hallway with a baseball bat waiting". Personally I'd rather something that stood outside the door and stopped it - Realtime protection. Neil: Try here: http://vx.netlux.org/

2004-06-16 22:46:00 | You can uninstall Norton 2003, then reinstall and the program thinks its a new start. You then face about a years worth of up-dates to download but I happen to know it works ;) Nevertheless, I moved to AVG a couple of days ago because many members recommend it. I also use Zonealarm. For what it is worth, Nod is the anti-virus program of choice - very good reviews. You'll note suggestions to change your browser. Just in case that sounds a bit geekish - what the Team are getting at is that 99% of the world use Microsoft Internet Explorer ( IE ) as the window (application) to look at the internet. This is the browser. There are at least half a dozen other browsers you can use. Free! The problem with IE is that it is targeted by viruses because clever people like to do so. Other browsers are ignored because there are relatively few users. I use Opera and really like it. Do a search on this forum for more info. But you cannot/should not delete IE - even if you could. Some sites don't like Opera etc. For example, I tried to review a book on Amazon last week, and couldn't post my worthy thoughts. :_| Some government sites are unusable without IE.

2004-06-16 23:42:00 | Hi Chill . It is my understanding from looking at the Bitdefender website that it does use real time/background scanning but, does not scan emails . Looking at the Clam . org and Clamwin websites, it does not do real time/background scanning "coming in the next . 04 version" . There are a whole heap of add ons and and other app's that interface with it though, especially the Linux/Unix version so, it may be possible . I only skimmed add on's functions and not all at that . It's very scalable and it's O/S which should mean fast reaction to any issues and no free riders settling down on your HDD . AV testing can be done at: EICAR test download page ( . eicar . org/anti_virus_test_file . htm" target="_blank">www . eicar . org) and this is the EICAR Link page ( . eicar . org/links . htm" target="_blank">www . eicar . org) for general info, vendors, online scans, firewalls, etc . But, most AV software recognises this as a test so all you really get is an example of how your AV software will react when you get the real thing . The best way to test your AV is to get a real virus or better still a whole bunch of them . Let me know how you get on with your live test ;\ (you really don't want to try it unless you want to trash your system) ICSA Labs ( . icsalabs . com/html/communities/antivirus/labs . shtml" target="_blank">www . icsalabs . com) is an AV testing organisation . | 244696 | 2004-06-17 00:32:00 | Many thanks to you all for your useful responses . From these and from a scan of recent AV product reviews, it seems the best choice for us is to uninstall NAV 2003 and re-install . Plus clean up the HDDs on the two machines . This is no great chore because the older of the two needs a cleanout anyway, and the other PC (mine) is only a month old anyway .

2004-06-17 00:59:00 | i finally downloaded the free bitdefender and installed it. the realtime scanning is disabled (enabled in paid ver). mgiht be handy as a back up AV but avg has a better updateing setup (manual updateinf off cd/lan etc). | tweak'e (174) | |
2004-06-17 01:12:00 | >PCcillin is still good to go once the sub runs out as long as your willing to manually download the pattern files sorry murray but i have tried that and it wouldn't find all the virus's. had to change it to AVG to clean it out.

| 244699 | 2004-06-17 02:20:00 | Hm, I've tested it against AVG and nothing . Nothing there, nothing to test tho . Haven't done so recently so, will give the above AV's a run tonight . What I did do with PCcillin is, updated the scan and damage clean up engines and swapped in a couple of files (register new . dll's, etc) that I got off the Trend ftp site, all freely available at the time if you did some research and hunted around . This had the effect of updating the programme build . Now there is a new pattern file numbering system and ID method and I can't get the patch or find any files I can further upgrade with . I can download and install the pattern files but I doubt they are effective anymore . I need to bite the bullet pretty soon if I want to stay clean . Hence my interest in this thread .
