| 245247 | 2004-06-16 10:12:00 | Hi guys, Does anyone know whether Statistics NZ can make you partake in a survey? Apparently something I agreed to do last year meant that I had to do it each year for the next 8 years! Surely an invasion of privacy now? I mean... can I simply refuse to take part in the survey now?? Lo. |

| 245250 | 2004-06-16 10:20:00 | If you set up a new business (usually a limited liability company) the Companies Office and / or IRd usually advise the Dept of Stats. The Stats Dept have the *power of legislation* to harvest info about your business for GDP and other national stats purposes. Bit of a bummer really but one of the administrative *joys* of self-employment. | andrew93 (249) | ||
| 245251 | 2004-06-16 10:22:00 | Not just for limited liability companiies. I had to do it for a while and I am just a sole trader. The good news is that it doesn't last for ever - eventually they pick on some other victim. And yes, you do have to do it. Tony Bacon |

| 245252 | 2004-06-16 10:25:00 | I would have normally just placed a link, but the StatsNZ site doesn't seem to like Mozilla or myIE2. Painfully slow to load then it came up with error message a few times saying browser isn't supported, then refreshed ok, go figure. Seeing as there is an army of those out there that don't use IE, here is a copy/paste for those interested: About your obligations Why should I provide information to Statistics New Zealand? When you are selected in any Statistics New Zealand survey, you are obliged to respond. We appreciate that completing Statistics New Zealand forms can be time consuming and demanding. To assist businesses overcome reporting difficulties, we will work with our business respondents to manage these demands better. Please contact our Survey Help Desk on 0800 809 464 or by email at surveys@stats.govt.nz if you need help in providing information to us. Will I be paid for providing this information? There is no authority for Statistics New Zealand to pay respondents for providing statistical information. Statistics New Zealand tries to spread the obligation for providing data fairly across all businesses and surveys. Where possible, most small and medium sized businesses are included in one or two quarterly surveys. If you consider that your business is incurring unreasonable time or costs in completing Statistics New Zealand surveys, please phone our Survey Help Desk on 0800 809 464 or by email at surveys@stats.govt.nz so that we can find ways to moderate these demands. Do I have to complete this questionnaire? If your business has been selected for any Statistics New Zealand survey, you must provide the information requested. We appreciate that completion of survey forms is time consuming and can be difficult from manual accounting records. Some people find it easier to provide the information by fax or by email. If you wish to provide information this way, please contact our Survey Help Desk on 0800 809 464 to discuss these options. |

| 245253 | 2004-06-16 10:25:00 | Well I am employed, don't have a GST number, and have even moved out of the house where they originally came to take my survey! What to do, what to do... I will call them in the morning to ask for a copy of whatever documentation it is they are saying makes me HAVE to do this survey... Lo. |

| 245254 | 2004-06-16 10:28:00 | Hmmm... well I am an individual and not in a business... the way I read it, those obligations don't actually apply to me at all! Thanks for the info, Jester... Lo. |

The Dept of Stats are pretty quick to get onto any business that is an importer or exporter as well as any business with more than 1 employee, or a business that has more than 1 location (plus any other business so long as it is a business!). Tony is right that it is not just companies - they target everyone but the most common surveys I see are directed at companies. |

Link (www.stats.govt.nz) Scroll down to "Privacy and people's obligation to respond to Statistics New Zealand surveys", where it says: There is a legal requirement to provide the information. |
