spaces inserted so they don't actually turn into real smileys ;)

245182 2004-06-17 04:27:00 I don't understand. I thought they were a downloadable thing. I have windows 98 and want something to add to my emails. And I don't know that much about computers - only from the stuff ups I have already had to fix. fern (4201)
245183 2004-06-17 04:32:00 Nevermind, Please accept my apologies on behalf of the above lot, I have been trying to show them how to behave for months now to little effect. metla (154)
245184 2004-06-17 05:36:00 Jester are you kidding me? I just tried that on my emails and sent to myself and they didn't turn into smilies . I have seen ads when surfing for downloading lots of smilies but am worried they might contain spyware .

To the others please don't make fun of others who may not know the correct terminology or how to ask the right question . Everyone has to start somewhere and I use this forum to try to learn more and I know I have a lot to learn . I didn't grow up with computers like many here .

Well, what do you expect when you lead by example? ]:) :p :D

Fern: Smileys are exactly the sort of thing that spyware pushers use to get their "product" into people's computers, being such a desirable commodity that a lot of people want . You will be hard-pressed to find any product that does not have spyware of some sort embedded in it .

If you really want to put smileys in your emails you could save the ones that you want from webpages to your hard drive and manually insert them as pictures into each email yourself as required . This will require you to send your emails as HTML or they won't show, and even then there is no guarantee that all your recipients will see them if their computer is set to view emails in text form only .

The other alternative is to download and use the Thunderbird email client which has the ability to use its own smileys . The only catch is that your recipients must also use Thunderbird or they will not be able to see them .

Oh, and don't take too much notice of that lot above, they are rather wicked . :D

And yes, Jester was sort of joking - those "smileys" he posted won't turn into graphical smileys but they are accepted "text smileys" guaranteed spyware-free . ;-)

finally a bit of info on what you actually wanted :-)

as mentioned allready you either need an external program or another email client to be able to insert smilies into your emails. while there are a few programs around that can do this i got to ask...why would you want to. this sort of stuff annoys the hell out of some uses and in some cases is automaticly stripped out so they won't even see it.

245187 2004-06-17 06:21:00 I wasn't going to comment further but...

I have to agree with tweak'e. An email splattered with that sort of stuff irritates me to the extreme (just look at some of the contributions to PressF1!) Email is all about brief and to the point communication, and smilies (especially the fully graphical ones that you are after) just detract from the message.
