You can see for example our Motherboard category is all wrong.. it's an example of over-categorising where the demand for the Motherboard forum would only really require one forum, not several subforums, and so it's an often neglected category. On the flipside you get a "stewpot" You can also have forums that are overmoderated, forums that are undermoderated, or forums that go up and down at the "about right" mark like OCNZ. We dont have too many mods but we tend to run a tight ship The general action we have taken at OCNZ is to observe the community and what direction it has gone in, then when demand is high enough we open another category to cater for that demand and to help balance out the community focus and spread of resources. This way, off topic posts stay in OT, and topical posts go into their categories in a structured manner. Users who are just interested in video cards only need to go into the video card forum. Users interested in cooling only need to go into the cooling forum. The idea that everyone will diligently use the search function is nonsense, because although the feature is there, and you can make it as in your face as you want, you're still going to get a majority of people not using it. If I were to categorise pressf1 I would keep it simple: Off Topic Hardware Software No more, no less. But it's a choice left to the community at the end of the day. The admins/mods may have different ideas, but without the community you dont have a forum, so cater for the community's needs first. Do a poll I reckon, let the people vote and those who dont like the outcome will just have to deal with it. |

| 245517 | 2004-06-17 10:45:00 | The lasttime this came up i suggested breaking it into sub-forums based on the os the person with the issue was using, along with a general forum and a hardware forum(and buy and sell) The vast majority of people liked it the way it is,including the mods,i think its a dead-end issue. |

If you want to read anything new over there you have to open up about 6 tabs to get to the topics you want. I think the sub-forums should go like this: Newbie forum (then I can these questions) General discussion/problems Hardware discussion/problems Off topic Buy and Sell -> split even further into buy and sell Troll forum (For those special people to rant and rave) |

OR just start using this link: forums.overclockers.co.nz It's sitting there plain as day at the top right of the forum index ;) Also 250 Threads? excuse me but what are you on about? Here are the stats, again sitting on the forum index plain as day as at Today, 10:36pm: Members: 2,672, Threads: 14,860, Posts: 177,031 |

A hyperbole to the number of sub-forums on your site is what I'm on about. :) I can see why people would be confused about where to post their question - they have to spend 5mins of their life thinking about which forum to post it in. |

| 245522 | 2004-06-17 11:58:00 | The main issue I see with your idea whetu is that although you obviously get relative noobs at OCNZ they will generally know whether they are looking at a video card or a motherboard. Here some of the problems or discussions aren't so obvious as to whether they are hardware or software related until a few questions can be asked and answered. Different markets, as you say you set boundaries and the community then sways it this way or that. Kiki's idea of having as noobs section will overcome this but some would rather not be identified as such and some experienced users would avoid it like the plague. I think the general nature of the forum lends itself to be kept in the stew pot bubbling away as it is. Although I do see merit in it too, we have so many threads that go OT once the main business is accomplished (and sometimes before) that it would make a mockery of an OT section. Cheers Murray P |
