245807 2004-06-18 10:49:00 I have spent the last 3 hours (with a few minor interuptions) looking on the net for NZ poetry for kids, i have to make up items to present one to the class .

there is a large amount of links and pages but not many it seems on NZ poetry writers for kids .

but cannot find anything along the lines of a nz poem, about nature suitable for under fives, can anyone tell me of any peoms they know ?

if i get a chance i will go to the library,

im looking for nature, animals or serene type poems .

something that will be easy to recite while giving demonstration with props in class, and later for interaction with the kids, (pacific and NZ themes fine)

i was looking for something about the beach, bush or nature . . . . . . . animals etc .

sorry to be a pain, but if any one out there knows one suitable from their childhood can you post it on here maybe, or a suitable link to a good poetry site????

i know nothing beats going to the library, but time is not always available here .

Apologies to anyone about this OT post .

245809 2004-06-18 11:05:00 Or........

We are the boys from down on the farm
We really know our beer,
There's much better value in DB
It never fails to cheer

DB pours cleanly
There's no spillage
There's no waste

And boy its got a mighty taste

Db beer - Its finest bitter
Made better.

A traditional NZ ditty. Someone told me you can substitute cheese, but I can't really see it. :p

245811 2004-06-19 04:31:00 Try a bookshop or library - there are loads of anthologies available .

The best recent NZ book of poetry for children is The Night Kite by Peter Bland, published last month by Mallinson Rendel .

I can't post a copy of a poem as that would be a breach of his copyright - even poets have to eat, and in order to do that they have to sell their books .

245812 2004-06-19 04:39:00 OK, I just asked my 6 yr old but she wasn't much help. If you really need some suggestions, I could ask her teacher but that won't be for a few days.

How about AA Milne of Winnie the Pooh fame.? Not Kiwi unfortunately.

Ah, she has just handed me her poetry book. Looseleaf. It appears to be a collection her teacher has built up over the years. Joy Cowley, Kiwi Kidsongs Twelve, www.curriculumconcepts.co.nz, Daphne Lister.

That gives you something to go on. Good luck. :D

245813 2004-06-19 06:03:00 My girl brings her poem book home every week. Im not sure where her teacher gets these from but maybe you can ask your girls teacher they might have the same sort of thing. The poems in there are very simple but unsure about them being NZ, Why do these need to be NZ?

245814 2004-06-21 10:55:00 Well i have found a poem but have not managed to source who wrote it, but know it is about NZ.

it has to be a nz poem because that is the assignment exercise, to be culturally sensitive etc etc etc.

now just got to make props for it,

thank you all for your help and suggestions much appreciated.
