245643 2004-06-18 03:34:00 I recently acquired, with a publication on Family History, a CD that contains several utility programmes. One of them is "DriverMAGIC Pro" for updating drivers. Does anyone have any knowledge and/or advice re this programme? KB. kbcad (1025)

245645 2004-06-18 04:11:00 Thanks for reply, Metla. I am naturally cautious about letting any outfit off the 'Net get into the innards of my PC, so I will heed your advice. However, it would be nice to know of your own experience with it. KB. kbcad (1025)
245646 2004-06-18 05:10:00 well, I have no experience with that particular program but have come across numerous apps that are similar.

At the worst its a charade for some spyware and a resource hog.

At best its bad idea, as far as I know they identify the gear by chipset, which is a last resort when it comes to drivers.

Realistically you only have 5 or 6 drivers on any system that warrant updating, and your far better off going to the manufactures site and getting the exact driver as verified by yourself or in the case of video cards the driver provided by the ati or nvidia.

One other scenario that this brings to mind is windows update trying to give people an updated driver for AC97 soundchip, there is so many variations of this chipset that my recommendation is that no one ever updates it, yet MS have decided to give everyone a generic driver..

Just my view on the issue,im sure others my have reason to see it differently, but if your looking to update your drivers i would recomend doing it manually, and i would ask if its needed at all?
