246131 2004-06-20 00:20:00 Hi I am running latest version of IE and OS is XPP overnight my browser is try to allways open this address res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#http://www.xtra.co.nz/
I have run ad aware and done virus check with nothing coming up.
I can ping out to most sites and i tryed mozilla which worked fine. No matter what i set as my default page only IE allways trys to open this address.
Any ideas would be most welcome. P.S all other pc,s on my network are running fine and are using 98SE,2000.

Is ad aware up to date? Also have you try SpyBot S & D you can download it from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/

Also this FAQ might help:

Note: this FAQ might take a few mins to load, but could be worth it

Hope this helps :)

246133 2004-06-20 04:33:00 That looks more like a bad setting than malware. It appears to be reporting a DNS problem. Graham L (2)

If that possible could be the case, Bert > who is your ISP?

246135 2004-06-20 08:35:00 Thanks Stuart

Interesting u mentioned isp I'm using xtra but have been trialing woosh
when the problem first appeared and had to use xtra again as woosh didn't support mozilla.
I have followed all suggestions on the link u left but no change.

Strange ? ? I'm using Woosh, and Firefox with no problems at all. I did use Mozilla a while ago, but don't recall any difficulties with it. I even use IE sometimes, but it is extremely rare, and if I could find a way to get around it for MS sites, it would be never.

Have you tried clearing your Temporary Internet Files in both IE & in mozilla?
stu120404 (268)
246138 2004-06-20 10:41:00 I should have explained that woosh wouldn't let me reinstall and reregister though mozilla. as I had removed woosh and tryed to reinstall to fix problem.
The real curly one is that the address or directory dosn't exsist on the pc.
and I have cleaned up everything .There must be some where on the pc that is telling IE where to go that overides the browser address. I have run hijack this but cannot find anythiny that is remotley close to that directory

???????

If you are talking about: C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm then it does exist on the pc just go to: C:\WINDOWS\System32\ then you should be able to find dnserror.htm

Try renaming it to dnserror_bad.htm & see what happens, you can all ways unnamed it if that does not work....

246140 2004-06-21 06:57:00 Hi

Yes I've run spybot and yesterdays version of ad-aware I can,t change the address as i don't know where to. Remember the browser is showing my default address which is just xtra.co.nz I got the true address it is trying to go to by looking at the properties which include
Cannot find server
Unknown Protocol
Not Available
Not Encrypted
res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm#http://www.xtra.co.nz/
size not avalible
