| 245988 | 2004-06-19 06:28:00 | is it very necessary to buy new antivirus when old av software from a few years back still give you free updates? just wondering if there's new scanning techniques or new ways that the more recent av program can do and make them essential eg. a new virus that can only be detected by newer av programs and not the old one... or is old av proggy with new updates good enough? |

Particularly the heuristic modes which may detect virus-like activity even though the definitions may not exist for that new strain. Or so the purveyors of the software would have us believe. |

We had 2002 at work, got hit by Klez, but the AV couldn't cope. Bought 2003 and Bingo! - no problems. I've just moved to AVG. Its free and well regarded here. |
