| 246666 | 2004-06-21 22:55:00 | I'm looking at buying a new MFD with printer/scanner/fax/photo printing capability and happy to spend around $600. Any advice please on the best model to get? I like the look of the HP PSC 2410, anyone know anything about that model? (I realise I will get better photo printing from a dedicated photo printer but I'd rather get one machine) | wattie (613) | ||

My first attempt) Personally I wouldn't recommend it given it is an inkjet - while the upfront cost is less you get stung in the long run on the cost of consumables - the cost of printing per page is more than double what you pay for laser technology. Check out the cost of the ink cartridges and how many pages you get out of the cartridges before you buy. Plus the estimates are based on 5% coverage of the page - effectively you can divide the projected yield by 20 if you are going to print A4 photos. Plus, IMHO the multi-function printers don't do any of the jobs well - and given the limited amout of scanning the average user does, usually a fax and laser printer is enough. Plus I believe the useful life of a purpose built printer and purpose built fax will outlast any inkjet or multi-function printer.... .... but that's just my opinion. :D |

| 246670 | 2004-06-22 05:21:00 | My farther has one of these and it is fantastic, you will get photo quality prints if you replace the black with a photo cartridge, and it is easy to swap cartridges when you want the black in again (in fact the photo cartridge comes with a holder so the print heads wont get dried when it is not in the printer. Also another benifit is the multi card reader. Rob |

After a lot of comparing printers, I have recently bought the MP700 which is less fax, other wise similar to the 730. I'm more than pleased with it, excellent quality text and photo printing, but then I'm coming from a dot matrix so may be naively impressed :) |

Try this link (pcworld.co.nz) I have the Brother 3820 CN mentioned in the article. Its quite accurate in its description, its not a photo printer and its only an average colour printer. It handles reports with small embedded photos just fine, if a bit slow. Scanning seems adequate. Photocopying is good. It suits my needs though, as its both networked and has good faxing abilities. At $422 +GST that it cost me it is a "disposable item" anyway, as long as it lasts a couple of years its fine. The Epson CX5300 mentioned up near the top of this post does not have a fax built in. |
