247095 2004-06-23 10:08:00 Some of you may remember a few weeks ago i setup smoothwall on an old computer i had and it works great. Now i have taken this a stage further and went to Dse and got a switch and now my second computer which is running Win Me also uses the same computer running smoothwall as its internet gateway. Now my question is this. My main computer is running Win xp home and my second computer is running Win me. Is it possible to use things like file sharing and my printer and scanner on my second computer even though the smoothwall box sits in the middle of both of them. If it is possible how do i do it. Thanks in advance for any help Glassman (5101)

yes standard windows file and printer shareing will work fine tho scanners are not normally shared.

>ven though the smoothwall box sits in the middle of both of them

actually the smoothwall box dosn't sit between them. all pc's connect to the hub/switch in a star config so if you turn off the smoothwall pc fileshareing between the other pc's will still work.

247097 2004-06-23 10:23:00 Correct me if I'm wrong, but your smoothwall is a firewall setup and only used to "interface" between your PC's and the outside world.

Using file-sharing and printers between PC's will not require the input of the smoothwall PC. as it just uses the switch to connect the 2 together.
The operating systems generally won't matter as you will be using a "standard" protocol between the 2 PC's, usually TCP/IP.
