| 247030 | 2004-06-23 09:01:00 | Hi, So I went and bought a modem to get some internet in Linux (Mandrake 9.1 I think)... it said it had Linux driver source and instructions to get it going. So I followed the instructions, and it gets near the end and I get a message that says something like "Operation not permitted". I can't get past that point, and therefore I can't get my modem to install. I went to the intel site and downloaded the latest version of the driver source, and it does the same thing. The intel site has a precompiled version of the driver, but for a different kernel version (I've got something like 2.4.19 and the precompiled driver was for 2.4.21) - would that possibly work, or is it unlikely? When it says "Operation not permitted" the installer is trying to delete "/dev/536ep". I get the same message if I try to delete it manually. How can I get this to work? Or should I take the modem back to DSE for a refund? I am logged in as root, and have tried from the GUI in a console window, and to a direct boot to command prompt. Help! :) Mike. |

Do you have a link for that modem? It may help if we can see a bit more information about the device. > The intel site has a precompiled version of the > driver, but for a different kernel version (I've got > something like 2.4.19 and the precompiled driver was > for 2.4.21) - would that possibly work, or is it > unlikely? You need to get the precompiled driver which exactly matches your current running kernel. You can confirm which kernel you are using by entering into a console window uname -r. Are you trying to compile the driver from source? If you would like to use a precompiled driver, you could always upgrade your kernel to a version which is still supported. Precomplied kernels can be installed using RPM's, but you should also get the matching kernel source and also install that (saves hassles later). |

Well there is the problem. It may be in use because as you are logged in as root you have permission. Sounds like a HaM modem which is not as good as an external serial modem. I gather the USB ones aren't as good as the serial. |

The Intel drivers etc. can be found here. > > The intel site has a precompiled version of the > > driver, but for a different kernel version (I've > got > > something like 2.4.19 and the precompiled driver > was > > for 2.4.21) - would that possibly work, or is it > > unlikely? > > You need to get the precompiled driver which exactly > matches your current running kernel. You can confirm > which kernel you are using by entering into a console > window uname -r. My kernel version is 2.4.21-0.13mdk. The precompiled drivers appear to be for Mandrake 9.2 (I'm using 9.1), and a kernel of 2.4.22. There is a precompiled Mandrake SMP system driver for my kernel, but my system isn't SMP. I'm trying to compile the driver from source included with the modem on the driver CD. I've followed all the instructions but I hit that "not permitted" error. Where would I look for a new kernel? And what size download am I looking at (remembering that I'm 56k here!) Its probably more worth my while for me to go to Dick Smith and buy their Mandrake 9.2 set for $8.95, then the precompiled modem drivers would (might) work. :) Thanks Jen. Mike. |

Yes, and the external serial modems are more expensive :( Cheers, Mike. |

| 247036 | 2004-06-23 21:49:00 | How about trying a reinstall of Mandrake? It ought to detect the modem itself and set it all up for you then. | dudess_on_a_mish (4468) | ||
| 247037 | 2004-06-23 23:37:00 | Hi Mike >I'm trying to compile the driver from source included with the modem on the driver CD . I've followed all the instructions but I hit that "not permitted" error . You are not the only one who has this problem with Mandrake 9 . 1 and the Intel 836ep chipset - there is some information here ( . linuxquestions . org/questions/showthread . php?threadid=62853" target="_blank">www . linuxquestions . org) which may help . >Where would I look for a new kernel? And what size download am I looking at (remembering that I'm 56k here!) You can find servers for the older Mandrake releases here ( . linux-mandrake . com/en/ftp . php3#older" target="_blank">www . linux-mandrake . com) and then look for the rpm's for the 2 . 4-22 kernel, but for the source alone, you are looking at a 40 MB download and then the kernel itself which is smaller . >Its probably more worth my while for me to go to Dick Smith and buy their Mandrake 9 . 2 set for $8 . 95, then the precompiled modem drivers would (might) work . I think this would be your best bet as well, certainly much easier than downloading and installing new kernel . Just had a look at DSE and they sell a 4-CD set ( . dse . co . nz/cgi-bin/dse . storefront/en/product/XC4028" target="_blank">www . dse . co . nz) of Mandrake 9 . 2 for just $4 . :) |

| 247038 | 2004-06-24 02:34:00 | Mike: Are you are doing this as root? You should have the "#" instead of "$" as the last character of the prompt. If not, ]b]su -[/b] then try again. If you are working as root, TELL it to do it: rm -f /dev/536ep. | Graham L (2) | ||
