246833 2004-06-22 13:08:00 The MPG file I am attempting to play is a music vid that is on a cd also containing three MP3 tracks.

When I pop the cd in, I am first told that Windows (I have XP) can perform the same action each time I insert the disc. The disc is identified as a music cd only. I am then presented with a list of options. An option to play the MPG file is not there, so I choose the option "Open folder to view files using Windows Explorer".

The MPG file only is then displayed. I click on it, and I get the message "Windows cannot open this file", and also that Windows needs to know what program created it. I choose the option that supposedly finds that out, but I get a "This page cannot be displayed".

I have attempted to open the file with Quicktime, Real Player and Windows Media Player, but all three tell me that they cannot find the file, even after I have located it and clicked on it.

246834 2004-06-22 13:31:00 Right click on the file and choose Properties. Is the Read Only check box ticked. Windows should have poped up a dialogue to say it could not access it because it was read only, but you never know.

While your there check what application the file is associated with you may nedd to change this, plus the version and vendors name in the Version tab, again windows should have given a hint as to why it could not play it if it was simply a file association issue. You say CD, are you sure the file is not a DVD format someone has burnt to CD?

Have you tried coping the file to your hard drive and playing from there?

Metla where are you?

246835 2004-06-22 13:44:00 Thanks for replying.

The cd the file is on is not a copy, it is a legitimately purchased cd. It's the Meat Loaf single "Couldn't Have Said It Better" single, which amongst other things, contains the video for the said song, which is the file I'm trying to access.

The Read-only box is not ticked. When I'm viewing it in Windows Explorer, it has the little icon with:

MEATLOAF.MPG
File
234,501 KB

But when I right click on it, all the fields within the General tab are blank. There's nothing listed next to "Type of file" or "Opens with". There is no Version tab or any other tab.

When I try copying and pasting it to the hard drive, the message "Cannot copy file: Cannot read from the source file or disk"

Maybe its the disc that is faulty? But I've had no problems doing anything else with it (playing the audio files on it, playing it on my stereo etc).

246836 2004-06-22 13:58:00 Could be copy protection, age of CD drive (or firmware update required, check manufacturers site for updates) or you don't have the necessary video codecs loaded on your PC.

Have you had any other problems playing MPG files off CD's? And you can't right click and choose Open with!

I'm running out of options that don't include infringing copyright laws in NZ. If I was to suggest you use Nero or Alcohol to copy it to HDD or a virtual CD I could get us both in to trouble so, don't try that.

246837 2004-06-22 14:13:00 Someone on another forum suggested downloading Nimo Codec Pack, which I did. I then attempted to install it, and got the message "This application has failed to start because MSVCR70.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem". I uninstalled it and attempted to reinstall it and got the same message.

Is this relevant?

246839 2004-06-22 21:40:00 Do a file search for the .DLL on your computer. It should be in WINNT\System32 folder.

You should be able to get it from MS downloads. One source is Here (www.dll-files.com) but you should do a bit more research before grabing any old .dll file. Your missing one could be a specific programme version .
