247277 2004-06-24 03:09:00 Me and colfusion got these new hard drives.... Western Digital 120GB's from DSE. Both the same... cant remember if they're 5400 or 7200rpm... but they are IDE.

When we shut down our computers, the hard drives make a loud k'thunk noise almost like the r/w head is being scraped back across the platter to the park position...

wtf? ANyone know if this is damaging or how to stop it?

247278 2004-06-24 03:10:00 Oh, my PSU is a 300W one that came with the case and cold's one is a 400W that didnt come with the case... willie_M (5608)
247279 2004-06-24 05:33:00 Possibly the drive head going into park position. You get what you pay for. kiki (762)
247280 2004-06-24 06:10:00 It will be Western digital's, and they do that. Doesn't indicate or cause a problem as long as the clunk is only at shutdown. Pheonix (280)
247281 2004-06-24 06:19:00 Oh and WD hard drives are more expensive than the Seagate equivalent Pheonix (280)
247282 2004-06-24 07:43:00 Just saying that if you bought it from DSE, it likely isn't the best model with 8mb cache and a 3 year warranty if it stuffs up.

You could investigate to see if there is any new firmware available for it. Sometimes they fix issues like this with new firmware for the drive. My Western Digitals don't do it though.

247283 2004-06-24 08:56:00 Interesting, mine is 8meg 80Gig WD, 6 months old and it clunks on shutdown, always has. Pheonix (280)
247284 2004-06-24 11:23:00 the 8meg cache was like $220!!

the one we gots was 2meg cache at a smoother $158...

247285 2004-06-24 12:09:00 At that stage I had a 7 month old 80Gig Seagate fail on me, so one of the suppliers had them on special, and with the 3 year warranty that came with the 8Meg cache model, just appealed to me.

But they are right about the late model Seagates...so quiet.
