| 247116 | 2004-06-23 10:54:00 | I have now installed a USB 2 PCI card for use with several USB 2 periferals (card reader, camera, etc) but I am unsure whether the use of the extension cable will slow transfers to USB 1 speed or if, being just a cable, provided the device and USB port are both USB 2, the whole setup will operate at the higher speed. The markings on the cable (other than the USB symbol) are "Belkin Pro No. Des 396,689 (UL) E129760 Type CM 75ºC 28AWG/2C CSA LL80671 AWM IIA/B 80ºC 150V FT4. Is this cable suitable for USB 2 use or should I buy another specifically defined as being suitable of USB 2? |

| 247117 | 2004-06-23 11:04:00 | USB 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0 cables should have distinguishing symbols on them. I don't know what they all are (I only have 1.0) but a search on google should find it and no doubt what the critical indentifying numbers are. Cheers Murray P |

| 247118 | 2004-06-23 11:33:00 | I do not think there are distinguishing marks on the USB cables in many cases. If it was a USB 2 cable, then the packaging would have claimed that. If it did not say it was USB 2, then its USB 1. The connectors are the same and its only the cable quality and makeup that distinguishes it. Use of the wrong cable can often reduce the speed. |

Perhaps the best way is to make a comparison in transferring the same data with and without the extension cable and note any time difference. I am assuming that the difference would be sufficiently substantial to differentiate over say 500MB? The packaging has naturally been long since recycled :-) The extension does seem uncommonly substantal when compared with the device cables - more akin to a normal 3-core power cord than anything else. I'd probably try running a young welder on it if it didn't have USB connections on the ends! |

| 247121 | 2004-06-24 02:08:00 | That cable is USB 1. USB2 cables use 26AWG for the data and 22AWG for the power wires. The only USB 1 cable DSE had the specs for online today uses 28AWG for all conductors. (In wire gauges, smaller numbers are for bigger wires. ;-)) |
