I thought nothing worked at the PC company, or was that "nothing worked after it left the PC company"? ;-)
Still, a product is the sum of the resources expended on it, and the PC Co spent a lot on advertising. That money had to come off some part of the budget, and there's always someone ready to supply rubbish components cheap.
Is the amount of advertising related to quality by some kind of inverse square law? Do outside consultants come into this formula?

Really, from memory I am sure that PC Company computers rated reasonably well in customer surveys. The problem with the NZ market is that it is so price focused... people don't want to pay a bit extra so that the company will be around in 5 years for on-going support.

247506 2004-06-26 23:40:00 Love them or hate them, the fact is they were cheap
perhaps too cheap and that is maybe why they went under.
They were a thorn in the side of every Local pc assembler because they were so cheap and difficult to compete with and still have reasonable
quality, upgradability, expandability most user buy on price, so they did well for a while.
Funny thing is Colin Browne still seems to have money !!

247507 2004-06-27 04:02:00 As a matter of interest,

Reseller news just reported that while the PC Company has been sold to Warehouse computers, they will not actually be assembling any computers themselves.

They will be using a Company called Whitebox express for their assembly purposes.

This company just happens to be owned by one Mr Colin Brown formerly owner of the PC Company.

247508 2004-06-27 04:17:00 The entire situation continues to disgust me.

I wonder how long it will take the snake to flood the market again, lose his company and then miracusly have enough money to buy it all back again.

Shame on anyone who suports or defends him and his dealings

Agreed.

The thing is new PC buyers don't know to watch out for companies like this and will probably buy a computer from there without knowing any better. Then they're left with a sub-standard item that they wasted their money on.

247510 2004-06-28 01:54:00 I didn't know you were posting here again Alan, good to see.
I take it you are not too impressed with Mr Browne, can't say I am either.
People like that will always win though because they have no conscience
like you and I.

247511 2004-06-28 10:16:00 The problem has always been, and still is, that most people want a Rolls Royce for the price of a mini. As evidenced here, how many posts do you see along the lines of "does anyone know of software that will perform like Photoshop but is free?". I long ago learnt that the cheapest is rarely the best (yes, you sometimes get a bargain - but the odds are against you). Manufacturers can't compete for price and quality so if they try to make something decent, it won't sell. Colin's company, Pegasus Computers, made good quality stuff for years when they could sell it at a reasonable margin. The rot only set in when the cut price (usually) Asians started parallel importing at prices nobody could match. Everyone then started expecting these prices to be the norm (me included), so corners were cut. I had a couple of PC General machines in the early 90s that were trouble free, but their failure rate was reputed to be around 65% in their latter years - hardly great quality!
The PC Company failed, but the parent company - Pegasus - has never stopped. In an attempt to clear the debts, they've been selling off stock through the Building Depot in Hamilton - not my first choice of PC outlets but I always see them going out the door when I am in the store. You gets what you pays for! A lot of complaints have been aired here about them, but a lot of working PC Co computers brought a lot of families pleasure because they weren't trying to push them beyond what they were meant to do. Remember, if it wasn't for the early "clone makers" like Pegasus, we would probably still only have the choice of Compaq or IBM at their very profitable prices!

247512 2004-06-28 10:51:00 As much as i agree with companies having to make rubbish in order to compete ...that only applies to the budget end...which is the largest slice but the pc company elected to compete at that end.

as for this

>The rot only set in when the cut price (usually) Asians started parallel importing at prices nobody could match

I cant garentee that The PC Company were getting the best prices out of all the companies in NZ,The ones doing the importing are supplying the resellers,i can access any stock that any "Asian" store is selling.
