247523 2004-06-25 04:35:00 The mysterious infection appeared to target at least one recent version of software by Microsoft Corp. to operate Web sites, called Internet Information Server 5. The software is popular among businesses and organizations.

"Compromised sites are appending JavaScript to the bottom of Web pages," the government alert reported. "When executed, this JavaScript attempts to access a file hosted on another server. This file may contain malicious code that can affect the end user's system."

The implanted code apparently allows others to use infected computers to surreptitiously route Internet spam e-mails.

A spokesman for Microsoft declined to comment immediately. (Microsoft is a partner in the MSNBC joint venture.)

Wow... So, while Microsoft products are on something like 30% of all servers, they still predict there's enough potentcy to this security vulnerability to "bring down the net" ;-)

Does this affect Windows Only PC's by any chance?

Chill.

247524 2004-06-25 09:37:00 Last night while visiting a favourite site, a small window popped up with a message that a Web update was available. (was like a normal window you get when one of your programs are informing you of anything , not a popup).
I was given a choice to download it or to be reminded about it later.
As I didn't know what it was about , just clicked remind later.

It hasn't appeared again since so don't know what it was really about.

Does this have anything to do with this Web attack thing?

247525 2004-06-25 10:13:00 Sounds like that could be a result of the way you have automatic windows update configured. What is your operating system. gerrypics (323)

247528 2004-06-25 13:44:00 Hi gerrypics
Am on WinXP pro. Am doing the windows updates myself and have turned off automatic updates.
Have done a Windows update since I saw that Web Update and there were no updates that related to the message.
That's why I found it so strange.
