| 247888 | 2004-06-27 09:11:00 | A great pity that sodium chlorate is not commonly available here as a weed killer. I used to use that exclusively for paths, driveways etc. in the UK. All the gardening and hardware shops sold it. It would oxydise and burn up weeds overnight, and the decomposition by-product was just common salt, which itself would limit re-growth. It was very much cheaper than propriety weed killers and much more effective. I suppose the problem is that it could be used as a crude oxydiser in explosives, but not as effective as potassium nitrate in that respect. If you are near a SuperCheap auto shop, they are selling 1 litre of Multicrop Glyphosate 360 for just under $8. |

| 247889 | 2004-06-27 13:45:00 | Thanks for all the reply . I mainly wants to kill those weeds that grow between paving stones . As my drive way is made of heaps of those stones and weeds are coming out in between . Both weed killer i looked at says 360g Glyphosate in active ingredients yet one is 9 . 95 and the other is 16 . 95 . The ratio are the same for both of them . Does it means I can use the cheap one instead? How long does it take to kill the weeds after application? I can't explain what weeds I want to kill as I don't know their names, some are big with thorns . I paid someone to do the lawns, I don't know what he used, but I had this big thorny weed on my front door, it was green healthy looking when I left for work in the morning, but when I got home that afternoon, that weed has turned brown and seems decomposed :O I really want to know what he used as it only take a day? Anyway, really appriciate for all the replies . |

It takes about 2 weeks for the glyphosate to work. You really need 2 or 3 days of dry weather so it doesnt get washed off straight away. Another trick with weed killers is to add a small amount of detergent to act as a wetting agent. Petro, white spirit, or turps on a stubborn weed will kill it in next to no time. With lawns selective weed killers are used that only kill broadleaf weeds and leave the grass alone. If you have Wandering Willy/Wandering Jew/Tradescantia, that horrible ground cover weed that affects dogs, then the only weed killer for that is the proprietary "Grazon" used for gorse control. It costs a packet. |

I think I meant 'my driveway sounds the same as yours with dirt and gravel that the weeds grow through' :) When the glyphosate decomposes, I think it then acts as a fertilizer that makes the weeds grow even more. That way the manufacturers hook you into this viscious circle of endless weed-killing. That was why I liked sodium chlorate, it also killed any seeds it came into contact with. |

| 247892 | 2004-06-27 21:29:00 | There is a product called "DAS" available from most garden centres. This is specifically designed for use to rid weeds from driveways and patios. I can thoroughly recommend it and it is effective for a year. It costs about $15 but it is well worth it. Good Luck. | summertime (2568) | ||

| 247894 | 2004-06-28 02:55:00 | Using large amounts of roundup ive managed to wipe out not only the nasties growing through my paving but also large areas of lawn, various trees, shrubs and gardens. Im pretty happy with my effort so far,the wife is slightly less impressed. My only issue is 2 trees that i have to "shape" every month or so,to get out of doing so i have poisened them both numerous times but they seem to be healthier then ever. Next up,Copper nails. |
