1365124 2014-01-13 09:33:00 Hi,

My PC is about 2 months old with no problems but got a phone call at work saying the kids couldn't get it to start. Sure enough, turning the power on at the PSU will light the motherboard light but if I hit the case power switch I get a clunk from the PSU but nothing else. The clunk will only happen once per on/off cycle - after switching the PSU off and waiting for the motherboard light to go out then switching it back on. Nothing else lights up - not the case power led, no fans, no beeps nothing. So I switch on PSU get the motherboard light but nothing else, I hit the case power switch and the PSU goes clunk and motherboard light stays on but nothing more.

Does this sound like a crook PSU or Motherboard or something else? Any help would be appreciated.

Clunks are not normal.

1365126 2014-01-13 19:19:00 Two months old! I would be going back to the supplier to fix it. Bryan (147)
1365127 2014-01-13 19:47:00 :+1: If new and you haven't played around with anything ... back to the supplier and get another one or have it fixed at their cost. Just mention the CGA if they start giving you any "it's out of warranty" rubbish. SP8's (9836)

Does sound ( no pun intended) like a Powwer Supply problem.

1365129 2014-01-13 21:47:00 Sure it's the PSU making a clunking noise? That sort of thing is more likely a hard drive... Agent_24 (57)
1365130 2014-01-14 06:20:00 Sorry - sound is really a click (just had my ear right on the PSU)!

Swapped PSU just now with one from work pc and powered up fine.

Component shop I got it from have an on-line automated request for warantee via my original order - very smooth (providing they honour it). I'll update progress. Are we allowed to mention suppliers names here?

By the way the PSU is FSP Aurum Pro Series 850. Any thoughts on this unit - should I push for an alternative make?

Thanks everyone for the responses - it's very much appreciated.

1365131 2014-01-14 08:30:00 Yeah go for it with the names, why not.

PBTech have been selling those. Their modular ones look and feel real nice, very tidy, but its a brand I'm not familiar with otherwise shy of the unit I just got for my wifeys PC we rebuilt recently.

1365132 2014-01-30 03:52:00 The FSP came from Computer Lounge. I sent it back and 6 days later got a status update to say it had been sent to the manufacturer and was waiting for replacement (obviously not a stocked item). After waiting a few more days I asked if they would allow a different brand if I made up the difference. Today the Corsair AX 860 arrived. 17 days without a PC because of a faulty albeit warranteed part is a bummer. Maybe I should have gone with a more common manufacturer that would be in stock? Or maybe a bigger supplier that would carry more stock?

Thanks again for all the help in diagnosing the problem!

1365133 2014-01-30 04:28:00 Have had to RMA a Corsair PSU twice with Computer Lounge, both times they had to wait for the manufacture to ship a replacement. Maybe that is just their way of dealing with RMAs? Avoiding the manufacturer refusing to replace the product after already shipping out replacement units to customers.

As for FSP, from what I've seen the look pretty good (the modular gold+ ones) apart from fairly average performance in the voltage ripple department. They seem to be decent value though.
