1365104 2014-01-13 02:13:00 Had to help a friend yesterday. Bit out of practice.

Wifi PC connected just fine but no internet. (She'd told me it wouldn't connect)
Checked main PC with modem - no net.
Check modem itrself - someone reset it and all the broadband settings were wrong.
Fixed that.
Then no authentication - get her to ring ISP and confirm username/password.
Fix incorrect password at our end on modem.

Now main PC gets net fine.

Go back to wifi PC - now it won't connect.

It seemed to be trying to auto connect (Windows wifi) and I could not get it to stop doing that. I removed it from the list, I disabled Windows wifi, reneabled, etc etc.
It would fail after a bit and say low signal, which was rubbsih, it was super strong. And connected fine in the first place.

Go back to modem, change SSID, Change password. No, still won't.
Reboot PC, reset modem and start over - nope.

In the end I installed the wifi cards connection utility and had no problems at all, but what is it with the windows one? I sort the wrong modem settings (NOT the wifi bit) and windows has a hissy??

I don't know, I've always found it a bit weird though. But my desktops are all Ethernet and my netbook runs Linux so thankfully I don't have to go near it.

1365106 2014-01-13 02:49:00 What O/S? I had many problems too with WIN8.1. I needed an update driver from the Wifi dongle manufacturer to sort. Windows was no help! Bryan (147)

1365108 2014-01-13 05:05:00 D-Link wifi cards have a bad habit of doing things like that, it seems to depend on what card / Modem combo is used.

Had one years back D-link nothing but problems, installed a TP-Link instead, = perfect.

It's a TP Link card. It isn't the card - it's the Windows connection tool. The TP Link worked well, but why does Windows get hung up like that...and how do you resolve it?

1365110 2014-01-14 10:03:00 I have an occasional problem with the wireless connection for my Nexus7. Do resets all round and get no joy. The only way I can get it to work is to go into my TPlink router and re-enter the wireless settings exactly as they are. After that it works fine until the next time. PPp (9511)
