1364479 2014-01-07 08:26:00 Learning curve aside, or what version if Linux is used, one point has not been risen.

WHO is going to convert all the computers currently being used, AND / OR new Computers Brought to Linux ? 40% of the XP users is over 100 computers
Linux doesn't come preinstalled on New PC's brought from the local toaster shop stores.

This does not need to happen all at once and any way not all will buy in. Typically after a time of introduction and playing, an install fest could be held.

Its all very well saying " a local Linux supporter to give a hand if needed" for one or two problems but if the local supporter suddenly finds out his /her skills are going to be "Used" for more than helpful support they could tell you where to go or start charging for their services.

... by which time SeniorNet staff giving a helping hand will probably have most of the skills they would need to do the job by themselves.

1364481 2014-01-07 10:05:00 I have done quite a bit of testing of some Linux systems over the past year and in my opinion the best version to start with for those moving from XP is Linux Mint Cinnamon, other versions seem back to front or just screwy in the way their start indexs are set up.

www.google.co.nz Cinnamon is the one I've had nothing but troubles with. yesterday I downloaded both the x86 & x64, tried running in a VM and get messages saying not enough resources or drivers, errrr????? the PC is more than capable of running it.
In the past I've also tried earlier versions of Cinnamon on fresh installs, something always goes wrong, usually stupid messages about resources, and these are on PC's that have more than enough power (and to spare) and they run earlier versions of Ubuntu, Xp, W7, or W8 without even thinking about it. The only Linux Mint that has worked fine is Mate.

That aside, I put Zorin on a VM last night, went straight in runs perfect. God knows why the others dont.

1364484 2014-01-07 19:04:00 One other thing to think about: Chrome OS.

Do they do much outside of a web browser? Could be worthwhile...

1364485 2014-01-07 21:34:00 The version of Linux Mint I have decided on to replace XP on my old P4 3Ghz with 1GB DDR and a Geforce FX5500 is.......................Wait for the drum roll.....................Mint 16 XFCE version.
Why? Because I don't like LXDE, and unfortunately, Cinnamon and Mate are both resources hogs on such obsolete gear.

Seems to be happy enough for now.

1364486 2014-01-08 00:32:00 As long as they recognize it's not a 1:1 identical switch, then sure.

Might be worth trying this though, it looks quite promising! http://www.zorin-os.com

Thanks Chill, and indeed thanks everybody for their input........ valuable indeed ! :D Our Tuition Manager is going download Zorin onto a machine today and try it out.

Also, thanks again Chill for mentioning Chrome OS, I had forgotten to take that into account. No doubt it will become very big, just like the Chrome browser, which
is now the biggest browser worldwide. Maybe we will download and try that too ! :clap
Misty :thanks

1364487 2014-01-08 01:42:00 Yeah Chrome OS is cool coz it loads straight into Chrome, and it's easy. Of course some of the users like my grandfather know and love Outlook Express, but the change wasn't that bad for him, and because he no longer has to worry about Antivirus and other things going funny, he's actually quite happy with it!

If you're interested, you can try here: http://chromeos.hexxeh.net

All this is really a matter of opinion like buying a car. In my opinion using a version of Linux that reminds you of XP is looking the wrong way. XP belongs to 2001 - a lot has changed since then in interfaces. Most people who have ridiculed Unity have done it after a couple of hours use - you need to use it for an extended period of time then most users' ideas change. ... and it is not hard - if you can use a search engine on line you can use Unity (no more poking around in menus).
