Well, I've never used Zorin so I really don't know, but at a guess it maybe something to do with desktop compositing

Wikipedia says of "desktop compositing"

A compositing window manager is a window manager that provides applications with an off-screen buffer for each window. The window manager composites the window buffers into an image representing the screen and writes the result into the display memory. :waughh:

Right at the start that has put "oldies" off ! Fine, for you young people, but has to be very straightforward, with few glitches, etc to engage them.

Thanks anyway, Agent_24. --- Did you ever use that surplus router I gave you, some years ago ;)

1364571 2014-01-16 07:16:00 Misty, just curious -- has someone "fiddled" with some settings " in Zorin - The reason for asking is I've got Zorin on two VM's, and just for the hell put it on a actual HDD / PC, and none of what you described has happened to any of them. wainuitech (129)
1364572 2014-01-16 07:44:00 Yep I run Zorin dual boot on my Win8 RTM comp, no problems, it's quite good, bit under-featured, I had problems making it recognize an old printer, LaserJetIIIP, but in the end worked it out, couldn't do that with the Win8 instal on the same hardware. zqwerty (97)

1364574 2014-01-16 09:34:00 When you do speak to the Tuition Manager please ask he/she how to get rid of/alter the awful 'Blue Hexagon' desktop background, I have spent some time trying to make it plain matte black but no go.

Zorin is not fully featured as it is installed, it is supposed to be a lite-weight alternative using few resources on underpowered machines, Linux Mint Cinnamon 15/16 would be much better for those wanting to upgrade from XP.

Don't use MATE or Xfce, the interface is bass-ackward in the Start Menu. Haven't tried the KDE version.

One way to change the background:

Click the Zorin menu ( start Button) on the right, System Settings > Background - Double click the displayed picture, and you'll get a sub page open, select Colors.

Zorin is close enough to XP to do most things the same or very similar. I wont be trying Mint or Ubuntu again, as I REFUSE to change my hardware to lower spec's, mainly graphic Cards to run the OS's, they cant handle the cards:groan:

1364578 2014-01-16 21:54:00 Very much appreciate all the responses, however, it does seem that we have tapped into a hidden reservoir of views, thoughts, ideas and conceptions, which have at times addressed the main objective and at times veered well off.
Our Tuition Manager has this to say re

Taking the info we have and our comfort level, it has been decided to trial two versions - (1) Linux Mint (2) Ubuntu. We ran into probs with the first trial, but I will try to report back after the second,

Warm regards to everyone ! :D

Yea, sounds like Compiz is getting up to no good. There's a program, compizconfigsettingsmanager, where you can adjust the compositing. You can also get rid of things like the wobbly windows if you so wish.
