1364559 2014-01-13 20:03:00 I don't think he was saying that Linux is easier to install than Windows, rather that Windows is just as hard to install as Linux for someone who has never installed an OS before. Yeah may have read that wrong - :) But Windows can be a PITA to install sometimes -- Any OS can be ;) Generally its drivers or hardware issues. wainuitech (129)
1364560 2014-01-13 21:34:00 Nice post there WT, I like that! Well laid out, direct 1:1 comparison. Factual, solid stuff :) Chilling_Silence (9)
1364561 2014-01-14 22:54:00 That part there, dont totally agree and I'll say why.

Take both OS's, Linux and Windows.

Start with a Empty Hard Drive and the processes to install.

One important one you forgot.

can boot into a live environment
Linux = Yes -- Windows = No

Other than that, great comparison. Though I'd say Linux is much kinder about setting up dual boot configurations :)

Windows Enterprise edition has a option to make what they call "Windows to go", Which is the OS from a bootable USB drive. Which is OK if a person has enterprise licencing, OR if it wanted to be tried, someone can always download the Enterprise Trial technet.microsoft.com Shame its only on Enterprise though. Good point though.

Given up on Dual booting currently, running Via Virtual Machines these days, that way when something screws up (as it usually does if fiddling about ) :D :p it doesn't damage anything else ( host OS)

Didn't know that = might have to download said trial and give it a go!
I tried virtual machines, but ended up choosing a mix of live environments and dual booting, just as sometimes you'd get funky OS's that'd boot in a Virtual Machine but not a live environment.

1364565 2014-01-16 05:56:00 Very much appreciate all the responses, however, it does seem that we have tapped into a hidden reservoir of views, thoughts, ideas and conceptions, which have at times addressed the main objective and at times veered well off.
Our Tuition Manager has this to say re
the interface – when any screen goes off or on it turns through 90 degress and slides in/out the back. I haven’t been able to stop it doing this. It was funny for the first three goes but then I found it annoying.

Taking the info we have and our comfort level, it has been decided to trial two versions - (1) Linux Mint (2) Ubuntu. We ran into probs with the first trial, but I will try to report back after the second,

Warm regards to everyone ! :D

That sounds rather strange. I can't say I have ever had this problem although the problem description is a little vague.
