248193 2004-06-28 08:01:00 I have a 56K ISA Modem that normally connects @ 33.6Kbps.
When i switch to a PCI WinModem (Generic 56K) i get connection speeds of 52Kbps (max).

Is there something i can fix with the ISA modem to tweak its speed a little bit more?...if possible

Cheers

248194 2004-06-28 09:23:00 connect speeds don't mean a lot.

>When i switch to a PCI WinModem (Generic 56K) i get connection speeds of 52Kbps (max)

but what is the actual download speed ??

248195 2004-06-28 09:49:00 Check if you have any extra settings added which could be limiting the connect speed. Jim B (153)
248196 2004-06-28 10:23:00 What protocol is the old modem? 56k used to be X2 or Flex, then bits of each combined to become V.90. The gear that your ISP uses will be V.90 and possibly one of the others but not both.
Connect speed is the starting point, always check the finishing speed for a meaningful number.

248197 2004-06-28 23:06:00 I have found that Win Modems always show a higher connection speed.
This doesn't mean a lot as the speed will vary all the time depending on line conditions and the servers which it is connecting with.
When you are loading a page on the Internet, watch the speed counter at the bottom of the Browser, it will vary all the time.

248199 2004-06-29 04:18:00 It might be defaulting to 33.6 .;D There's a command string which will set it to the V90 standard. The mode setting could be in a saved setup, so it will power up that way. Graham L (2)
248200 2004-07-01 08:15:00 thanks for the info

Connect and download speeds both indicate i am getting a faster connection with the PCI Modem .

I have tried it with downloading files and i can see difference in addition to the actual connect speed that comes up when the connection gets established .

I have swapped both modems several times during short intervals and get same results and so dont think its a network issue thing . And also i connect to same ISP

Will see if its something what Paul and Graham said .

Cheers

248201 2004-07-01 08:52:00 If you like you could tell me which operating system you use so I can tell you how to change things via the control panel.

It's a while since I used a modem as I currently use a wireless broadband connection.

Having said that I still can configure a modem on other computers using anything from Win 3.11 to WinXP Pro.

Are both the ISA and PCI currently installed?

What make and model is the ISA modem?

If I had a choice of either ISA or PCI I would try to configure the ISA first as it would appear you are doing.
