247971 2004-06-27 10:12:00 Today I reinstalled my operating system (Windows XP Professional) and essential applications (getting rid of a lot of rubbish). Performance is much improved and a lot of hard-drive space regained.

However, Ahead Nero CD burning software now refuses to write to the CDRW drive [Samsung DVD(read only)/CD-RW]. When previously it has seen the right drive automatically, it now pops up a "choose recorder" panel, which shows only "Image recorder" (Virtual Device)".

There is a paragraph on this error in the Nero manual (4.2), but none of the possible explanations seems to fit: the drive has a correct drive letter assigned, and is recognised by every other part of the system [explanations 1 and3] (though when a blank CD is inserted, the drive
registers in the Nero or My Computer/Internet Explorer file tree as a
mere "CD Drive". Eject the CD and it shows as "DVD CD-RW Drive" again.)

"Autodetect CD-ROM" in the Nero "extras" menu correctly identifies the drive as a Samsung DVD CD-RW drive, but the burning routine just won't
see it. So the drive does not appear to be representing itself to Nero
as a model introduced since that version of Nero (5.5.8.1) [Explanation 4].

That leaves only Explanation 2: driver conflict with another recording program - which can only be the lame program inbuilt with XP. But this has never happened before. I originally installed Nero over the old slow Atapi non-DVD drive the machine came with. When that drive failed and I replaced/upgraded it, the Samsung drive came with its own copy of Nero, which I installed with no problem; certainly no conflict with the
Windows routine.

Any ideas?

247972 2004-06-27 10:31:00 Have you patched XP? Can you disable the XP burning utility? Have you tried loading a freshly downloaded copy of the Samsung drivers?

247973 2004-06-27 12:38:00 I have had a simmilar problem after changing to a virtual drive, then when I tried to change back to the physical rw drive it was not there as an option. I tryed everything about 3 times or more, even looking into the registry, program settings, switching off windows burner, reinstall nero.
The only way I got it sorted was to grab the latest version and hey presto it works, altho I havnt tried to use its virtual drive burner again and probally wont as use different software for this now.

247974 2004-06-27 22:33:00 Are you sure you used the Nero CD that came with the new drive?

Each OEM Nero is tied to the brand of CDRW/DVDRW it comes with.
If you try to install a copy of Nero that came with say a LiteOn drive onto a PC with a Samsung drive you will get the problem you have.

I used both discs in turn: originally, I used the one in the standard plastic CD sleeve that came in the original packaged Nero that I installed for the Atapi drive, and requires me to enter a registration code (this version, I assume, is not hardware specific, as Ahead could not know which drive I had).

When that failed, I uninstalled, and reinstalled using the disc in the paper envelope that was supplied with the Samsung drive. That, now I come to look at it, has printing on it, saying it cannot be used with any drive other than the one it was supplied with

But neither works.

As I say above, I tried "extras - autodetect CD-ROM" and Nero comes up with the drive's full specifications,

[SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD SM-348B]
TYPE=IDE GENERIC_1
COM=-1
CDRCAP_MAXREADSPEED=7200
CDRCAP_MAXREADDASPEED=4950
CDRCAP_FIRMWAREREVISION=T504
CDRCAP_READSPEED_TABLE=600
CDRCAP_SETSPEED_METHOD=1

which I have emailed to Ahead, to see if they can help.

247976 2004-06-28 09:56:00 Make sure the drive is recognized by windows.
If that all looks good try going to nero's website and download an update for your version of nero, if the the version of nero is not up to
date it will not see the newer drives....having said that the copy that came with the new drive should work, but you never know stranger things have happened

It is: every part of the system recognises it except the writing part of Nero. (I was forced in the end to use the XP CD writer for the files I urgently wanted to transfer to removable media*, and this was fortunately one of the two times out of three that it actually worked).

And Nero, let's not forget, has recognised and worked with this drive before, for more than a year. Since the Samsung drive, and the copy of Nero that went with it, was installed by a third party (the computer shop that sold me the drive) I don't know if they had trouble doing this, and what they did to solve it, and they probably won't remember.

The only "updates" I've seen I have to pay for. Paying some $50 for a new version of something because the year-old version you've already paid for no longer works, sounds like a bit of a gamble to me.

*and re: this; maybe someone can tell me if it's possible to get XP's printer set-up to read a driver (4 MB) from the C: drive. It expects the driver to be on removable media, when I'd downloaded mine from the mfr's website. It was on C: and I couldn't point XP to it!

247978 2004-06-29 01:59:00 You cannot update from nero 5 to nero 6 you can only update to the latest nero 5 ( for free that is) here is the link nero5 update (www.nero.com)

As for the printer, Xp must first see the printer when it does the hardware wizard will pop up then point it to where you have the driver's
inf file, don't let it try to find it force it in the right direction.
What brand and model of printer is it?

247979 2004-06-29 03:19:00 The printer side of the problem is solved; I ran through the individual files in the driver folder and saw setup.exe and fired it up from within itself, ignoring XP's plaitive cries of "new hardware detected", Printer is now functioning, without needing the copy of the driver I burned onto CD (it's an Epson C20UX, BTW; scarcely state-of-the-art, but it came with the PC and does me for the very rare times I want to commit something to hard copy on the spot).

Thanks for the upgrade pointer; when I get home, I'll see whether it makes a difference. Thanks.

247980 2004-06-29 07:12:00 SUCCESS!

Thank you Tech_Meister (and others); upgrading to version 5.5.10.56 seems to have fixed the problem.

It appears, though, that I would have been out of luck if I'd had only the disc that came with the Samsung drive. I initially based the upgrade on that version. After upgrade, that showed the Samsung drive in the "recorder" panel, but with a red circle and diagonal line over it and a note "this version can only be used with the drive it was supplied with." I guess once upgraded the new Nero is no longer recognised as attached to that drive.

However, I uninstalled (again) and installed from the Nero that I'd bought independently to go with the original drive. After upgrade, that one picked up the Samsung drive properly.

Thanks again.
