Tks

248005 2004-07-15 22:00:00 This middle click thing is really marvellous. It did take me quite a while to realise that the wheel also doubles as a click mechanism. :D

Also, I had reconciled myself to not having the same use for my favourites listed in my personalised home page of "NZ City" . Assumed that would be largely defunct. How glorious it was then to middle click on one of these and find that a new tab appeared very quickly !!!!!! Absolutely marvellous.!!!!!! To think that all this time I could have been using Firebird/Firefox. :D :D

Doing a search to locate this topic was also very worthwhile instead of just starting a new post. We should all encourage each other to use search more. It comes up trumps so often --mind you then the 500,000 posts will take a lot longer :(

That is still available - look for the "Single Window" extension . "Outside" links (ie, links to pages on different websites) will then open in a new tab . The middle-click is the one that opens a link on a background tab though . ;-)

248007 2004-07-15 23:37:00 Somewhat on this topic - how do you open up a new tab without using a link?

Sure, when you get two tabs going, you can right click and tell it to make a new tab, but what do you do when there are no tabs? Like when you have just started the program?

Ctrl+T

You can change the options in Edit | Preferences | Advanced | remove tick from "Hide the tab bar when only one website is open" if you wish. :-)

248009 2004-07-16 00:59:00 Hi Growly
Yes, I am interested too as it is all so new to me ! I mean you can go to file > new tab and get one but there is nothing in it - so not much use. The first time I opened a new tab that worked I went to the "bookmarks" and opened the web page I wanted from there.

PS - It is marvellous though and I am very far from complaining - just trying to learn ! :D

The idea of opening a new tab is so that you can type in the URL of the page you want to go to . Sometimes that can be quicker than hunting in your bookmarks/favourites .

Also, did you know that it is a bad idea to go to your banking website from a bookmark? Not so much in Firefox, but definitely in IE because some of the nasties you can get from the web can change your bookmark/s to direct you to an identical but false banking page and log what your account number and password are when you type them in . :O
I think it is called "phishing" and Firefox, Mozilla, Opera, etc will show you the false URL in the addressbar whereas IE won't . Or it didn't - they may have fixed it now, I am not sure .

Incidentally, when I want to open a page in my Bookmarks/Favorites in Opera all I need do is go Alt+F2, type in PF and Press F1 opens . Takes about two seconds . :-)

Forgot a bit . . . .

It is also handy opening a blank tab in order to open a bookmarked page without replacing the page you are currently viewing .

248013 2004-07-18 03:29:00 Just found out by chance that if you want to close a tab the quickest way seems to be to go to the tab and hit the middle button and it disappears.
Simple !!
