| 248155 | 2004-06-28 01:59:00 | I have been connecting to the internet for several years on my current home computer and phone line. However for about a week now I have been unable to connect. I have not loaded any new programs or deleted any files that might have done something. I use Windows XP Home Edition as my operating system. My Modem is dialing the number and then after a period of about 10 seconds I hear a busy line signal and after a short period it the goes onto re-dial and trys again. This can go on for ever and after about 5-6 tries I cancel it. I have checked my phone line and cables and have even used new cables. I have a dial tone on the line and I do not have call waiting. I have even tried taking my computer to friends place to try there phone line connected to my ISP (Clear Net). I have also removed the modem and tried another modem letting the computer detect the changed modem each time even putting it into a different PCI Slot. All seems to be fine. If I go into Device Manager all appears fine and I can even query the Modem and that appears fine. I have also contacted the Clear Net Help Desk and have gone through all my settings to check and try different things. So far I still have the same problem and I am no further advanced. I would appreciate any advise. Thanks |

| 248157 | 2004-06-28 02:14:00 | What happens if you use a normal phone to ring the Clear Number your modem is set to dial, does it go through or do you still get the engaged signal? Try setting up a new dial up connection and put in a cellphone number and see it that works. If the cellphone dialling works, and you don't get an engaged signal when you 'manually' dial Clear your number may be wrong in dial up networking. J :D |

| 248158 | 2004-06-28 02:22:00 | No that goes through and I get the noisy fax line type noise. No the number in the dial up networking is correct. I think I have been through every possible setting with the Clear Net Help Desk people checking all my settings as to the number I am dialing in on and what items I have checked or un-checked in my settings and even tried some alternative settings that they have suggested. I was beginning to wonder if it was a Windows problem? |

Some years ago had something similar and eventually found somebody some blocks away had tapped into my phone line and was making toll calls at my expense. The caller was a bit dumb and gave me her address when I so rudely cut in on one of her toll calls. | FrankS (257) | ||

Make sure tone dialing is selected in Dialing rules/Edit Might also be a good idea to delete the connection and setup a new one if it has not already been done. |
