| 248704 | 2004-06-30 11:19:00 | If I set my system to scandisk when it next starts, it tries, reports it can't do it & carries on rebooting. If I run command in the run box it will checkdisk & report some errors in the unused area & advises to run chkdsk /f. When I do that it says it can't lock c: it's being used by another process. I've tried Task manager & stopped as many applications as I can without the computer throwing a wobbly but it still won't do it. Does anyone know what that process is ? Phil |

Windows is very helpful like that, telling you what's going on in the background or what error is caused by what. See if the system events throw any light on it, go: Control Panel > Computer Management > System Event Viewer. There are several (3 on win 2k anyway) event viewers that you can view alerts and background processes by, they are time stamped and dated so you can get pretty close to the time it is happening. There are also alert flags that will indicate warnings, errors and information. It will not necessarily be in the warnings or errors if at all and could be rather cryptic. Cheers Murray P |

| 248706 | 2004-06-30 11:55:00 | Thanks Murray, I had a look & it showed event 11, when looking at the properties it gave me a MS url. I went there & it reckons the IDE cable is faulty. I'll swap it for another tomorow. Cheers Phil |

It could be more serious, besides you digging around in the PC ;) Do you have access to a disc utility like Nortons, System Mechanic or the drive manufacturers utility. If you don't have the latter, you can download them from the manufacturers website, check the drives model # as you may find there is more than one to choose from. Cheers Murray P |

| 248708 | 2004-07-05 09:40:00 | Hello Murray, It's been a while, I sussed out what the problem was after eliminating hardware. It turned out to be Zone Alarm. Once I uninstalled it, cleaned the registry with Regscrub & Windoctor, the problem vanished & got a performance boost too. I removed Norton anti-virus & replaced it with Trend Micro Internet Security Trial. It's all going good now. Cheers Phil |

| 248709 | 2004-07-05 09:48:00 | Was it Zone Alarm 5 that you had phil? It was found to be very upsetting to peoples systems,as numerous threads showed, about the time you had your problems. The fix was to uninstall it and go back to the earlier 4.something. version. Good to know you're up and running again. Hook |

| 248710 | 2004-07-05 09:56:00 | The filename is ZLSSETUP_50_590.015.EXE Which i presume is 5.9.015. The update feature advised there was an update to download, but did nothing when OK was clicked. I noticed the system getting slower & slower to boot & especially power down. On the positive side I found it was the first version I didn't have to tweak in some way to get a simple network operating. Phil |
