248472 2004-06-30 03:04:00 Just had Jetstream 256 connected. Using this site www.shell.net.nz
I get my download speed - 32.6kb/s or 265.7kbps. Should it be faster and if so how do I go about improving it, please?

248473 2004-06-30 03:23:00 Lets do the math here:
You're on a connection that's limited to 256kbps, correct?
The Speed Test shows you downloading at 265kbps, or 32.6KB/s. This is pretty much correct, as there's 8bit in a byte, so you get 33.1KB/s

Now, being on 256kbps you should be limited to 32KB/s, so you're marginally faster than your limit.

Should it be faster?

Do you think it needs improving?

I'll leave you to do the math :-)

248474 2004-06-30 03:23:00 This should be the right speed you are getting. bk T (215)

I also have jet surf 256K with Xtra & did the same speed test as you:

Your Internet Connection Speed is:

32.9 kb/s or 268.5 kbps

At the bottom of that test page it says:

Factors Affecting Bandwidth are:
Internet traffic
Load on this server
traffic on your ISP

Raw Data:

Size of file tested: 58 kb
Time took to load: 1.763 seconds

248476 2004-06-30 05:09:00 Hi People
Thanks for that. That's what I expected but when I did a run on PC Pitstop, it came up with a longer than expected ping speed (180).
How do you do a ping speed check?

248477 2004-06-30 07:32:00 For a Ping test

If you have XP, click Start, Run, type cmd, then press enter.

Type

ping www.pcworld.co.nz

Press enter

Should get something like this:

Sending ping request to www.pcworld.co.nz [210.48.100.12] with 32 bytes

Answer from 210.48.100.12 : bytes = 32 time = 51 ms TTL=55
Answer from 210.48.100.12 : bytes = 32 time = 49 ms TTL=55
Answer from 210.48.100.12 : bytes = 32 time = 48 ms TTL=55
Answer from 210.48.100.12 : bytes = 32 time = 52 ms TTL=55

Statistics for 210.48.100.12
Packets : sent = 4, received = 4, lost = 0 (loss 0%)
Approximative elapsed time in milliseconds
Minimum = 48 ms, Maximum = 52 ms, Average = 50 ms

50ms is the 'ping'.

The PC Pitstop test seems to go through a few servers till it gets there - my ping on that also says it is too low.

You can try the McAfee one too,:

us.mcafee.com

Result:

File Size: 150.005 KB
Time Elapsed: 4.657 seconds
257.68 Kbps
(32.21 KBps)

That seems to read quite fast - whether it's right or not is anyone's guess.

Just tried the test as well and got -----

288.6 Kbps
35.4 Kb/s

Comforting ;)

248479 2004-06-30 10:45:00 My pings were:-
minimum=130ms, maximum=135ms, average=135ms. OK, so I'm slow.
How do I improve?

248480 2004-06-30 10:57:00 You could try using the cmd box again and typing

tracert www.pcworld.co.nz

It will show the route from your PC to PCWorld, and may help identify where the connection is stalling.

248481 2004-06-30 20:34:00 Thanks Jester
Tried pinging again this am, and got pings of 45, which is ok. Did the tracert thing but got timed out on all 30 connections - whatever that means.
