248549 2004-06-30 12:09:00 An excellent topic

I know these callers are just doing their job but they really get up my nose. Especially the ones that ring at dinner time.

My techniques for getting rid of the unwanted callers :

"Can you hold on for a second?", put the phone down, go outside, check the mail box, grab a bite to eat, have a drink, make plenty of noise...pick up phone "are you still there? Good, can you hang on for another minute? Thanks" ..... repeat ad nauseum until they've gone - especially the ones phoning with hot stock tips from overseas

The *Indian accent* "excuse me sir but can you spare a minute or two for survey?" usually gets a "What's in it for me?", response = usually "nothing", so I say "ditto for you" and hang up

I once had an Amway guy call me saying "hey remember me from school", I said "yeah, I remember now - didn't you used to bully me?" - his sales pitch lasted about another 10 seconds...

The research guys are just doing their job and they are "sport" whereas the Amway / vapid.com / timeshare / rescue helicopter - fantastic internet / health / marketing / soft drink / its not an emergency (where do these guys get off?) /secret business opportunity guys are just a bunch of greedy materialistic ******* who think that everyone wants more money, more wealth and to live the American dream. I pity these guys and they get the full force of my tele-wrath.

...but that's just my opinion

:D

BTW "tele-wrath" sounds so cool I might just have to copy-right it!

248550 2004-06-30 12:27:00 >Wierd and creepy.

For wanting a meeting?...we have found people sneaking around on my fathers property, and knocking on the door at 9pm with invester kits and sales pitches.

Even had a "nubian prince" and minister of the interior doing the bank scam actually turn up in person.....Crazy desperate people out there.

One that amused me was a box that was dropped off,Inside it were the details on a garenteed way to get rich, but by opening the box you were agreeing to pay 20 grand for the info inside.

Needless to say i opened the box, spat in it and rang the fool to come back and get his rubbish. When he did turn up i escorted him off the property by the scruff of his neck.

Its quite satisfying being a big fat bastard sometimes.

248551 2004-06-30 19:26:00 You have been tagged by the biggest network marketing "company" in the world. Goto www.richdad.com . I was approached by someone a few months back to selling some of there wares but decided that it was a little bit on the dodgey side. The lady who HOUNDED the crap out of me did mention that they had a new energy drink coming out soon and that it would take the market by storm, she said it was the ideal time to get inn beacause this new drink was going to make a few people a lot of money. blah blah blah.

Dont get me wrong I did read rich dad poor dad and a couple of other books written by this robert kiyosaki and the ideas and business models are very good and I got a lot out of them but pyramid selling isnt me.

248552 2004-06-30 21:51:00 Bing - I knew someone would know the answer. It had to be something like that. Cheers Mike.

We had a whole string of Amway calls five or more years back. People my wife had known at university would ring up out of the blue and chat away for 1o minutes and then - whammo - "I'm starting a new business and .......".

After the first couple of times we recognised the pattern and could spot the calls in the first few seconds

1] Always a casual aquaintance rather than a close friend
2] When aksed straight up would never admit to it being Amway - but obviously wouldn't deny it either. Doh!

Now I know about the evil Richdadites I'll spring that one on them straightaway if I ever get another call. These things are like quasi religions in the way the followers have an almost religious belief that the scheme is going to chnage their life AND they always seem confused when they get an angry reaction. They just can't understand why someone else isn't as excited as them by the whole thing. At least true religious zealots have the balls to knock on your door and try and convert you face to face, which I've always kind of respected.

248553 2004-06-30 22:18:00 All these "tele-sales" people are full of crap. Really....if the products and systems etc are soooo good then why aren't they out there doing it themselves? We all know the type, "I have a way for you to become a millionaire", Wow really??!!! Then you must be a millionaire, so why are you wasting your time telling me about it?

Intelligent people realise there is only one way to succeed and that is through hard work. That's my philosophy and nobody calling to sell me property on the Gold Coast or shares in some ficticious US company (on the verge of "making it big") is going to convince me there is an easy way to make money.

If it sounds to good to be true then it ALWAYS is.

248554 2004-06-30 22:27:00 Has anybody ever tried this:
Telemarketer - "...starting up a new business in Energy Drinks, its going to take the world by storm and make a chosen few a lot of money..."
You - "Really? Sounds like I'll have competition, Im just starting up my own company selling a new Energy Drink, as well as.... Coffee! You want in?"

]:)

Scouse:
Good one! My girlfriend worked as a Telemarketer for a couple of months not long ago, and I remember her telling me one night after work about how that happened to her. She said it annoyed the heck out of her after waiting for 10 minutes, but she didnt want to put the phone down in case of a lost sale.. She looks back now and laughs though, so your idea sounds like a good one :D

I was targeted by this group as well, had to tell a long time associate they either had to drop the pitch or were no longer welcome at our house, took them over a year to finally give up on it,it finally dawned on them after a year of pushing people away that their crusade had made their life no better at all,but they were semi-deluded into happiness by the bubble of brainwashing they were enveloped in.

As for rich dad/poor dad, after hearing a cassette of one of the guys seminars i thought he was amazing disrespectful to his father.Infact i was disgusted by what he had to say.

That hits the nail on the head. All these advertisements for business secrets, exclusive seminars rah rah rah - if the idea is so good, why is this person so anxious to tell you? Why would they bother? They should be so well-off that letting others into the secret for $49.95 would be more bother than it is worth.

There are no free lunches. No easy road to material wealth.

And Bruce makes a very interesting point. My experience of Amway proselytizers is that it is a religious experience for them. Albeit at the altar of Mammon. They want to convert you. They are poor sad people.
