248312 2004-06-29 10:51:00 OK In that case in Modems it should have Apple Internal 56K Modem (v.90) or (V34) showing there.

I would suggest selecting the V34 script as that gives a more more reliable connection if the phone line is not good quality.
In Control panel/ Modems click on the arrow at the end of the Modem box and select the above script.

Just to clarify the previous instructions for setting up Remote Access as I don't know how experienced they are with connection settings.

Where it says "name" that is of course the login username, the first part of their email address before the @
Password and username are both case sensitive.
Make sure they type in the ISP dialup number and not some other number.

No more info needed at this stage.

Just go through the procedure exactly as I have listed it which will get all basic settings correct and unless there is something really abnormal with the computer it should connect.

248315 2004-06-29 21:18:00 Thanks Jim. I will go over to their house tomorrow and will post the results when I get home. Steve_L (763)
248316 2004-07-01 10:49:00 Hello Jim - I went over to my friend's house and followed the instructions you gave. It was an 'interesting' experience: my friend had to interpret the German words on screen but he is not at all familiar with computer language and had a difficult time giving an English translation. And the keyboard is the German layout and Macs seem to have different keyboard-shortcuts than PC's. ;) Anyhow, we managed to get through your instructions up to a point.

The model DOES dial and connect. I tried it with my home number and it did fine, picking up my answer phone message as well. But when we used the ISP (Infogen) number, we got another error message. Actually it was my friend's husband.... we deleted the items as you instructed but then when we had to re-enter the ISP dial up number neither of us knew it and I had to go home and get it off the Ingogen site.

When at the Mac, I managed to do all of this:

========
Go to Apple menu/Control panels/Remote access
Delete the name, password and phone number
Click on Options at the bottom, make sure "Use Protocol" PPP is selected
Make sure "Connect to command line host" is not ticked
Click OK
Close in top left corner and Save
Go to Apple menu/Control panels/Remote access
Type in Username, Password and Phone number for their ISP connection
Click the close box in the top left corner and save settings.

Go to Apple Menu/Control panel/TCP/IP
Check and select the following
Connect Via: PPP
Configure: Using PPP Server
========

But could not do anything from here on:

>>Name server addr: should show the DNS numbers of their ISP eg Xtra 202.27.184.3 / Additional Search domains: type in the ISP eg xtra.co.nz / Click the close box in the top left corner and save settings.

I just could not see anywhere the DNS numbers (etc.) should be placed.

I did take some digital photos of the screen message boxes. They are in German but I thought if I could email them to you, even if you do not understand German, the layout should be the same and you could tell me what box to click, etc. you are If you are willing to go this route, please send an email to me at: macmalady AT yahoo. co. nz (with no spaces, of course).

I'll be away from home for about five days so be patient if I don't reply ASAP. Will check email when possible.

Thanks ~ Steve

By the way, I wonder if my friend could get an English OS to replace her original German version. Via Mac in Wgtn? Would it cost anything?

248317 2004-07-01 10:55:00 Forgot to mention: going through your instructions, I did not have to change anything, i.e., the settings were what they should have been. Hope this makes sense. In other words, I could not find anything strange/different than what you gave. Steve_L (763)
