248398 2004-06-29 10:20:00 1 - My recycvle Bin has a red cross on it and when clicked a message comes up "this file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this type of action. Create an association in My Computer by clicking View, Folder Options. Tried doing this, problem still persists.
2. When I right click on the recycle icon on the desktop there are 2 items in the folder BUT when I try to empty the recycle bin it says there are 132 items. Where and why are they hidden?
Operating Windows 98 SE and have Nortons installed.

248399 2004-06-29 10:41:00 Check this
click on the Norton Protection Tab and you will see several options, one of which is "Empty Protected Files". For whatever reason Nortons or Windows loves to place things in this area. So you have to Empty this on a regular basis.

248400 2004-06-29 10:41:00 I suspect You either have Nortons sysem works installed or nortons antivirus 2003 or better. By default the recyle bin is then renamed nortons protected recyle bin and the 132 items marked as deleted are able to be resurrected by nortons if needed. Go the nortons icon in the system tray open it, click on options, advanced tools, nortons protected recycle bin, purge files, then disable protection. That should bring your recycle bin (Hopefully) back to its normal state.
Of course if you like the idea of deleted items being held in limbo leave it as is.

248401 2004-06-29 11:13:00 Thks for the help but unfortunately nothing worked. I deleted all the protected files and then uninstalled Nortons System Works (hopefully). I have AVG installed as virus protection. When I click on the recycle bin it still gives the same message. Is there anything else I can try. summertime (2568)
