248927 2004-07-01 09:09:00 I have a laptop for work and at this time of year my office is bloody cold on a frosty morning. In the book I got with the computer it says that operating temperatures should be between 5 and 25 degrees. Am I going to stuff it by turning it on and having it operating in temperatures below this?

cheers
mike

248928 2004-07-01 09:42:00 Hi miknz, I live in the Bay of Plenty and occ the outside temp gets below 5 , and the laptop seems to work OK at the office ... is your office really below 5 in the a.m. [ shivers :( ] ? ...regards KatiMike (242)
248929 2004-07-01 09:48:00 That's one heck of a cold office mate. If it is under 5 degrees ring OSH, you shouldn't be working in that temp - except if you work with refrigerated goods etc. Jester (13)
248930 2004-07-01 09:51:00 Do really mean, your operating temp could be less than 5º ?

It's hard to believe. Maybe time to find a warmer place..

248931 2004-07-01 09:53:00 This morning it was -3 when I got to work, office would have been around there till around 9.30(concrete block walls, no sun and a few jerseys). Have never really bothered to much with heating the office as I am in and out(office to workshop) all day and being surronded by block walls the room never seems to heat well anyway.
Is running the lappy at subzero temps gonna stuff it?

Been working in the tyre trade for 13 winters and never had a heater in the workshop. now that I have my own office I am used to working ion the cold and typing with blue fingers, you just work faster and chuck on another jersey.

A snippet of a press release dated 4th Dec 1997:

"Thermal discomfort can lead to work accidents and reduces productivity," said OSH Occupational Hygienist Nick Matsas. "These concerns are reflected in the Health and Safety in Employment Regulations which put duties on employers to provide facilities to control the temperature."

"Most workers are comfortable working between 19-24°C and air-conditioned buildings can often be prone to problems as much as non-air conditioned workplaces," Mr Matsas said.

Employers of workers who operate in extreme hot or cold temperatures such as foundries, bakeries and cool stores have the specific obligation under the Health and Safety in Employment Act to prevent harm to their workers.

"As humans are warm blooded, we can internally regulate our temperature, keeping it at 37°C plus or minus 2°C. If the body’s core temperature either rises or falls beyond this, then serious illness or death may result."

"The bottom line is that employers must take the issue seriously. There have been many incidences where workers suffering particularly from heat stress are often less likely to complain and are accepting their conditions," Mr Matsas said."

Don't worry about your laptop, worry about YOU. You can't type in gloves anyway.

248934 2004-07-01 10:06:00 OK, ya posted again while I was getting that info .

Back to the laptop, I would suggest that the biggest issue you would face would be condensation .

The insides of the laptop would be warmer than the outside air, resulting in condensation on internal components and the case . This could adversely affect the screen and mousepad .

If the laptop is moved from cold to warm areas, or vice versa, you also risk further damage from moisture inside the laptop . The electronics in a laptop wouldn't like that .

I wouldn't think it would do the battery any good either . I don't think that batteries like the cold that much . You may find the life of it decreases .

Your call .

248935 2004-07-01 10:08:00 Why is it that we cant do anything in this country with out some sniffly nosed, cardigan wearing govt offical saying "you cant do that ". Will need OSH approval to pass an oversize No.2 shortly.

OSH and ACC annoy the crap out of me.

I agree with some of your sentiments, but I strongly believe that no one should be at risk or injury or worse, while at work. It's not worth it for $(insert rate here) an hour. It's not a case of proving how tough you are.

If I see or hear of unsafe work environments I speak up. I hope others would for me if the tables were turned.

Anyway, don't use your laptop in your fridge :D
