248860 2004-07-01 06:11:00 Hi all, for about a year now we’ve been using MS Word, and during that whole time we’ve had the same problem with the spell checker. Recently we upgraded to office ’03 and thought the problem would go away, but it hasn’t.
The problem is this: Every time you type a word (for example favour) it shows up incorrect as it has the default set as English (US). On my laptop I have no such problems, I set the default to English NZ long ago and it never changes, but on the other computer even when you switch it to English NZ and make it the default it still switches back as soon as you hit the space bar or type a word or anything. I cannot see why it does this, I’ve tried going through all the language settings I can find in office and nothing fixes it. So now I’m asking here.
Thanks in advance for your help
~ Tony.

248861 2004-07-01 06:31:00 The settings in Regional and Languages (under Control Panel) will affect it. What OS version? godfather (25)

Win XP.

Good question once again.

Have a read of my very recent post.

Why do we need to ask?

I can click on the profile and look at previous questions and hopefully work it out. The O/S that is.

248865 2004-07-01 11:40:00 If you look at the profile and go back a bit it's WinXP with SP1.

My point is why do you or I need to ask or search.
Can we not have a *.txt file on each users computer when they can do it which list hardware and software

This person was running WinXP with SP1 on the 9th June 2004.

Of course I have no idea if this is the same O/S being run today.

For all I know this person is now running a different O/S

248866 2004-07-01 11:51:00 So I would think that you upgraded from the previous version of Word ( whatever that is ) and all settings have been left the way they were.

I would suggest that you find all instances of "normal.dot" on the computer in question and rename as you find them. You can rename to "normal.old" There will not be two copies of "normal.dot" in one folder or directory.

Uninstall "Word" or the whole of Office.

Reinstall Word or Office.

normal.dot file will be re-created.

248867 2004-07-01 11:53:00 Words spell checker and it's insistence to revert to American english every time one of the many language or localisation settings, anywhere, is upset by something like mars and venus being misalignment is areal pain in the a**e .

There are three main setting you need to check, uhmm . . . four:

Control Panel > Keyboard > localisation . + Regional Setting & Localisations > language & localisation .

Word > Tools menu > Language or Spelling & Language (something like that) . + Word > Format menu > Paragraph > Options or Modify > Language drop down list at bottom of the dialogue box > choose your poison > Default . I'm not sure of the last one, and there's a box to make sure it is unchecked but, will check when I'm back in windows or some Word wiz will put it right . My version is Word 97 so may differ ever so slightly anyway .

It may also pay to delete Normal . dot after making the changes (if any) in Control Panel then doing the changes in Word . For me sometimes it sticks sometimes it doesn't . When it does stick, it's usually for a couple of months or so until something upsets Word and it decides to go all neurotic on me .

Good lick and don't give up ;)

248868 2004-07-01 12:00:00 You only need to re-boot and fire up Word to recreate normal.dot afaik.

I've got a simple idea for the issue of information posted with queries or lack thereof so will post in your thread Baldy.

248869 2004-07-01 23:17:00 You may have a corrupt dictionary file (*.dic) or the settings not changed everywhere.

Select Tools|Options|Speilling & Grammar then click the Custom Dictionaries button then select your dictionary then click modify. Change from All Languages to English(New Zealand).

Next, with a document open you will see in your Status Bar (bottom bar where it says Page # etc) you should see English then the country - only partially but hover your mouse over this and it will hopefully display Language: English(New Zealand).

Just to make sure it will stick double click this area of the status bar and the Language dialog box will appear. You may see more than one language (US & English) so click on the NZ flavour and click the default button and make sure that Detect Language Automatically is selected.

If all this doesnt work then go back to Tools|Options... then remove the custom dictionary and create a new one. You may wish to copy the words in the old file so you dont have to build up the new dictionary again.
