2004-06-30 12:43:00 | I have just fitted a Smart Link 56K PCI Modem - V.92 V.44. Data Fax Voice(Prag atic Brand) and I am only getting 33.6 k connection speed with Clear Net. I have to connect on Safe Mode 1 which is an option in the Modem Helper utility if you have problems connecting to the internet. If I remove the check from the Safe Mode 1 box then the computer does not connect. It dials the number and makes the sounds as if it is connecting but doesnot and then gives the 678 error message and then goes onto re-dial. I have also disabled the Quick Connect feature to try and improve the connection. However this does not have any effect. The Maximum Port Speed setting is set at 460800. Although I have experimented with 57600, 115200 with no change in performance. I have no Extra Initialization Commands loaded and wonder if I should have something loaded here? My previous 56K Modem which has just died a week ago was connecting up to 48 k connection speed with Clear Net from Glendene in Auckland. My Windows operating system is Windows XP Home Edition. If anyone has the same Modem that could offer some assistance at improving my connection speed that would be appreciated - Thank you

There's only a few dollars difference :-( This page gives the strings to force V.90 and speed limit. www.modemsite.com Quick connect is a V.92 only thing. Your modem may be trying to connect at V.92 without dropping back to V.90 when that fails |

2004-06-30 22:24:00 | Safe mode sets the connection speed to 33k Try forcing a V90 connection with the Extra setting +MS=90,1,,56000 Otherwise download the lates driver from this link www.smlink.com

2004-06-30 23:06:00 | I have been to that site address and downloaded the latest driver for XP Windows and this has made no difference. However I will try tonight your extra setting string command to see if that helps. Thanks for your reply.

2004-06-30 23:17:00 | Yes I realised the safe mode was giving me the 33k connection speed. Just for my own knowledge which is very minimal when it comes to Modems why do we talk about V90 rather than V92. I thought the V90 was the old technology and the V92 was the newer technology. Or can we only use the V90?? Thanks.

2004-06-30 23:21:00 | I will check out the site address you gave me. When we talk about V90 and V92 are we not able to use the V92?? Thanks for your help.

2004-06-30 23:38:00 | V.92 adds "modem on hold" providing the ISP supports it. Not aware that any ISP in NZ do support it. Speed etc is the same as V.90

2004-06-30 23:41:00 | V.92 is newer but offers very few advantages to the ISPs and the Telephone companies so it hasn't caught on. There are a lot of problems to overcome to implement the modem on hold feature. You'll probably be on ADSL or cable before V.92 works properly | PaulD (232) | |
2004-06-30 23:56:00 | Even if the ISP does not support it, I believe some V.92 modem drivers under XP can detect any"call waiting" beeps and pop-up an alert that a call is waiting. Very immature technology as yet though, and I would not rely on it.
