How hard would it be for any virus/worm/attacker etc to kill any dinky-toy-personal-firewall process running on the machine? Once the attacker is executing their code on your machine you are shagged anyway.

248692 2004-07-01 03:56:00 yes.....

as soon as any program/virus turns off the firewall(MS or other) the New MS security center will tell you that "your firewall is turned off dick"

Good point, you're right there :-)

Robsonde:
I dont think the Security Center would put it quite like that, but close ;-)

Isnt ignorance bliss... I have no Firewall... No Anti-Virus Software... No Automatic Updates... No Security Center... No Worries... ... ...;-)

248694 2004-07-01 04:19:00 so new the review of what happened when i installed the RC version . . . . .

NOTE this is with RC2 build 2149
my system was up to service pack1 and had almost all hot fix downloads installed, firewall was only on the dial up conection, using AVG free 6 . 0 . 711

ok so we ripped in to the shrink wrap and find one CD and nothing else, no instructions of any knid . . .

put the CD in to my system and off we go
a few screens of "this is service pack 2 do you realy want it, EULA and question about backup of old files for un-install later"

5 clicks had that out the way, then we have 35 minutes of it doing the upgrade .

at the end we are told the "you need to re-boot" so i hit next to re-boot and wait .

the first boot was very slow and had a few extra screens of "please wait . . . "

after about 3 minutes i get a screen about "automatic up-dates" MS had detected that you dont have automatic updates turned on, would you like to turn on automatic up-dates .
this dialog is done in suh as way that a new user or a dumb user would say yes to automatice updates . the yes answer and a big green tick and a recomended and the no answer has a big red cross and a bunch of text about how bad you are to not selecting yes .

once the system boots, we get to see the security center for the first time, SP2 has turned on the firewall on all my connections including the Lan, IT DID THIS WITH OUT ASKING ME ANYTHING . . . . . . .

with all looking happy in the security center i close that window .

MSM messagner pops up an alert about my sreen name being a bad choice, "never use you email address as your screen name , it will get you spam" .

next I get a alert about "daves quick search bar" , i love this program but MS say it may be a popup or unwanted activeX controll, so I give that the OK to be on the system .

so far all my programs work .

the service pack has installed a new version of outlook express and a new version of media player, but have been installed with out me saying yes or no .

the security center "sees" my anti-virus and is happy that is is working and is up-todate .

all looks happy in the land of nod .

my only problem now is who to give to Office 2004 to . . . . . . :-)

248695 2004-07-01 04:39:00 well I had it installed also . . . . . . . . a Beta version but probably the same verison as yours or not too far from it since I downloaded it only a week ago . . but I'm not quite sure . . . . . . anyway I"ve gotta little html file that runs a vb script to open my cd tray, (lazy me ) , normall when I click that it opens the cd tray and pops up a little html page saying the tray is open . . . . . . . . . well the system prevented it from running with a warning about malicious scripts showing up in a box just below the addy bar on the html page . . . . . . . . I was to clik there to enable it or clik a little link there to get more info . . . . . . . well after a bit of a walk thru the internet options settings as reccomended I thought I had turned off that block function only to find next tiem I cliked it to open the cd tray same thing happened . . . . . . . . . . . . . . well minor I guess but what about vb scripts in excell for example etc . . . . . . . . . hmmmmm . . . . . . . . anyway also I downlaoded a new uptodate driver for my Asus GE Force Fx5200, now usually I use the Nvidia ones but decided to goto the maker to see what they could provide . . . . . . . . well after installin that all I got was a nasty blue screen at boot up . So . . . . . . . back to safe mode to remove it . . . . . . . . I guess theres still some issues to clean up . I thought the firewall was useful, in that it gave you feedback and also blocked apps from accessing the net from within the puter but wondered about LAN configurating . . . . . . . All in all I dont think it's too bad . . . . . . . . might reinstall it I guess it wasn't a bother and it seemed to have some useful stuff . . . . . . . . . . . hell it took long enuf to install yep about 35 mins i guess . Mind you it's a 270Mb download so I guess I'm a determined type cause I did download it on my dial up connection .

Now . . . . . about that office2004 I'd really like to have it and the missus says it'd help her a fair bit with doing accounts etc :-)

248698 2004-07-01 07:45:00 You should give it to me because you are the most incredible person I know, and you are by far the kindest, most humble, most sincere and most caring.

Also, because I'm goddamn gorgeous.

I love you.

If they are smart enough to get in to your computer they'll be smart enough to nuke that warning long before it flashes across your screen. ;-)

:^O Well I don't know about you, but the constant use of ..... to separate messages is very difficult to read or understand. You learn paragraphs in standard 3! :O

Yes indeed. Well with any Microsoft security software I'd take with a grain of salt. Bound to have backdoors in it all over the place.
