248682 2004-06-30 20:17:00 hmmmmmm........office 2004 .......

well I think you are an excellent person to go to all the trouble of typeing up all that informtion about sp2. Very kind of you to pass on that stuff 'straight from the horses mouth' so to speak. There are a lot of PF1 visitors who will have to deal with the ramifactions of this soon and many of us here dont get invites to MS seminars. Take myself for example I'm just a poor strugglin self employed tech who created himself a job. I used to work at $10 per hour jobs, y'know shovelling sh*t and etc, (ha ha), then I got smarter. Decided to goto a tertiary educator and get a half decent qual so that I knew enuf to fix puters for people, and could build a business. It's quite satisfying indeed to fix someones puter, or to help them in some way and teach them about the machines they so often rely on but know little or nothign about. I"ts also satisfying indeed to come here, (and other similar places - experts-exchange, trademe mssg board etc etc), and read folks questions and try to add ones 2c worth. Is a great way to learn as well and gives some feelign of community spirit which you and others add to by being kind and offering to help the helpers.

Now, I could certainly do with a copy of this office2k4. My business has very slowly built itself up over the past couple of years, through constant advertising, to the point now where I am now the main breadwinner in the family. I every day get calls from folks who have problems and I take my courage with me when I go to fix their puters cause altho I've got a minimal qual I know that I surely dont know everything, in fact I know enough to know that I have a lot more to learn. I'm a pretty good tech i guess cause folks seem to often refer their friends to me so guess I've gotta nice attitude. The missus says I am far too generous as often I'll not charge em the 'full' amount, and this contributes to the lack of extra money at the end of each month. Sure I pay the bills but only just. I've gotta nice puter but only cause I got lucky last year and won $4700 on Lotto so as part of our spend up I built me a good puter knowin I will need it and use it for a long time. Well otherwise I'd still be using the old 200mmx..... Anyway I only have 'open office' cause I cant afford several hundred dollars for a 'real' version of office, which I'd much prefer. Got to pay out advertising bills, extra this month too cause I'm putting a $300 advert in the local phone book, and saving to pay for last years taxes and this years taxes and the rates and the power and the phone/net, and maintenance on the car, which i MUST look after well or i'll be walkign to jobs, and the student loan, (sigh) .............anyway again I've had to struggle along but it's been a pleasure all the way and very self fulfilling to create this reputation/job/income from my own efforts. Essentially I guess I'd like a copy of office cause I cant afford to buy one and it'd be extremely appreciated.

248683 2004-06-30 21:09:00 Hi Robsonde,Thanks for the SP2 info.

Re: Office 2004,I think it is very generous of you to offer it to PF1 people & I'm sure there are people here that deserve it more than I do.
If I was the lucky recipient It would be nice upgrade from works & word, powerpoint viewers that I currently use.

248684 2004-06-30 21:33:00 Microsoft Partner Breifing sounds cool :-)

Just thought I'd take the time to comment on a few things said here:
Hackers>
If I were a hacker, I wouldnt wait for the patch to come out to learn about a vulnerability if possible. I believe there are hackers out there who are pro-active and exploit the vulnerability before MS even release a patch.

The Firewall>
Huge improvement, long overdue, but I'd rather have a System that didnt need a firewall.

The Security Center>
Good piece of work there, and its good to see anti-virus vendors updating their software so quickly to work with it!

DEP>
I'd rather they learned how to code properly in the first place, although supporting it for the other software applications is good :-) Although you have to ask yourself: Are vendors encouraging sloppy programming by using it? The programmers no longer have to take as much care about Buffer Overflows because there's a hardware register that takes care of certain parts of it.
On top of that, as far as I was aware, all 64-bit CPU's handled bugger overflows differently from x86 PC's, in that it discards the data rather than executing it? Am I wrong here?

Outlook Express>
I'd still rather Mozilla Thunderbird any day! What, no Spam filtering?

IE>
Too little too late IMO!
There's too much stuff out there targeting IE because its so easy to install crap onto your system and be totally oblivious about it. If I had my way, WinXP SP2 would remove iexplore.exe and replace it with Firefox!

WinXP SP2 will be installed on non-legal versions of Windows, you can patch the pidgen.dll or you can simply use a key that's no blocked... There are apps out there that generate a key and check it against Windows Update to make sure its valid.

Security options chosen by default>
I like this, its about time that Microsoft realised they have build an in-secure OS!

WinXP SP2 may kill your system>
So may Firefox, get over it. Most people have more to gain than lose by trying out XP SP2. Ive not had a single issue and have been installing it since build 2082, on around 30 machines in total! Not a single problem on any of them!

Kiki>
I'd say its just Windows... Do you have an Athlon64 CPU?

WinXP SP2 wont install on illegal Windows Setups>
LMAO, that's rich! No really..
"Hackers are working on a hacked version of SP2 that will install on any system"
Not likely! Hypothetically, if any coder were dumb enough to bother, he wouldnt start until the final WinXP SP2. Aside from that, its a piece of piss to find a new un-blocked key and switch to it. AFAIK, most blocked keys were implemented in build 2142.
I must say I agree with Metla here :-)

Bear in mind Im not an advocate of Piracy, just stating the blindingly obvious facts ;-)

248685 2004-06-30 22:43:00 drcspy,

Have you ever looked into setting up a shop?

The rent i pay is less then the cost of constant print advertising and the exposure is far better then any print advert.

248686 2004-06-30 23:36:00 Thx for the info Rob Greg S (201)
248687 2004-06-30 23:58:00 well metla i have considered it but not gonna do it......I live in cambridge and theres at least four shops here in the main st already........they dont really cut into my business cause I'm almost exclusively a 'mobile tech' .....sure the ads cost me about $5200 per year approx........but well with shops I'm sure the rent woudl be dearer.....and then I'd need some one at the shop, (the missus ?), and stock etc...........well of course I 'carry' some stock, ram, cpu's, psu's, vid cards, modems etc as I need them often on jobs but a shop full would be a lot lol..................nah I like what I do and I've developed a fairly loyal customer base and am slowly building it...........lotta folks love someone comein to them, instead of all the drama of unplugging the pc draggin it to the shop and trying to tell the tech what the hell is wrong then waiting a week and hopign the shop/tech gets it right lol.............when I visit them they get very quick service, usually within 24 hours or less, they learn a lot about their computers and the net and etc, it's lot less hassle, and they get to see what is done..............all in all I like the current situation and so do my customers .........it's very much a 'service' ........ drcspy (146)
248688 2004-07-01 01:19:00 Good write-up Rob, thanks for that. ;-)

It looks like the new security firewall in XP2 has been ripped to shreads in the tech world already. Have a read of this:
www.iamnotageek.com

It will truly make alot of people especially the corporate world believe that they have a firewall in place when they're nowhere near as safe as they may think. If it means delaying SP2 even further they absolute MUST include an application black list AND prevent applications from accessing the internet until you approve them.
Fire-and-Ice (3910)
248689 2004-07-01 02:19:00 Fire-and-Ice:
Interesting, Im still reading the article, but found this:
Microsoft even provides a DOS based administration to this (only exploitable if user is logged in with admin rights). If you'd like to disable the Firewall do this from the command prompt:

netsh firewall ipv4 set opmode mode=disable

An alternate route is through vbscript

Set objFirewall = CreateObject("HNetCfg.FwMgr")
Set objPolicy = objFirewall.LocalPolicy.CurrentProfile
objPolicy.FirewallEnabled = FALSE

Wow... How hard would it be for a Virus writer to kill the firewall once the virus is inside the PC!! No difficult at all... Surely MS arent this stupid are they?
