249235 2004-07-02 10:14:00 greetings folks!
Have had Skype installed on my computer for about 6 mths, registered and shows me as online, but no matter how many searches I do in many countries, language or whatever search parameters, I have never yet found a person as on-line, although it say there is 3,500,000 users or so online. What is this thickhead dong wrong this time? System specs, Win XP Home, 2.4gig cpu, 512 meg ram.
Thanks for any suggestions.

249236 2004-07-02 10:54:00 I can't give you any help with it but are you aware it is built by the inventers of Kazaa.
The service uses a peer-to-peer networking scheme, but rather than sharing files, connected PCs help route one another's calls.

It is supposed to be free of spyware at present but who knows what they might do in the future.

249237 2004-07-02 11:44:00 If you click the Search For Skype users link on the main interface, then click the advanced tab, you can change the country to search along with other parameters. If you leave the country blank (ie all countries) and dont enter a username, you wont get any results. Change the country to New Zealand and leave the username blank and you should see users. I just checked and there were over 150 users on.

As for spyware, I haven't found any in it. Sure, they may introduce something new and improved with advertising, but for now nothing seems malicious and the voice quality is good.

Sure, they just keep a copy of all the encryption keys. ;)

Ah but it does far more than that. You can actually call outside the system to real phones at a really cheap cost as well. My friend of the family called from Holland 3 nights ago using Skype. The quality was really good and he was paying only 0.01 Euro per minute. Or in our money about 2 cents per minute.

It is about time P2P was put to more use than file sharing and it also takes the wind out of Telecoms sails as well if it catches on more.

249241 2004-07-04 08:06:00 Thanks for all the replies guys, sorry I am a bit tardy to respond, but have been very busy lately. All searches come up with lots of results, but not one single search result so far has shown up as online. Would appreciate it Zqwerty if you would give me a call, my Skype ID is lynda-tony.
Thanks again all,
Tony S.

Well I did a search for our family friend and it came back with his id. I asked that I allow to see his online status and he just happened to be online and approved it straight away. I could then see he was online.

Maybe this is the step you are missing. It seems you have to ask the persons permission to be able to see their online status before it will show what it is.
