2004-07-05 11:10:00 | Sticky: How To Get Effective Help on PF1 . Help Us Help You . If you are new to the Press F1help forum, welcome . The intention of this document is to help you get the best out of Press F1 and it's members . These are not rules but, a Guideline on the effective usage of Press F1 . Please read on and feel free to use the links provided as well as the Press F1 FAQ's page and the Search function where you may find your issue has already been discussed and resolved . Read On . Your Topic Title (the subject of discussion) Try and make the topic of your post as specific to the problem or issue you want resolved . If a particular programme or hardware device is causing you trouble or you want to know something about it put is in the topic . For example: <do we need examples?> Internet Explorer, Page Not Found or PC wont start, Invalid System Disk If you dont know what is causing the issue try to get as close as you can in as few words as you can . Help, Urgent, Please, etc, are not descriptions of your issue and will not get you any closer to resolving it . Most people do not have time to read every post on the forum and will bypass threads without an appropriate description . The Question: Again, be as specific as you can . Include any error messages you receive, pop up boxes or things that happen that are not what you expect or want to happen . Include the name, model and/or version of the software or hardware that is causing the problem, if you can . If you are unsure, ask or follow this [Link] . What were you doing or attempting to do at the time or just before the problem occurred? What operating system is installed on the computer? For example: Windows 98SE version XX . XXX or Windows XP Service Pack 1 . If you dont know all the information, say so, then ask . What is your computer? Include, make, model and system specification, if you know it . For example: Joe Blows PC, Mack 0 . 01, Pentium 3 . If you can also include installed RAM, size of hard drive, modem and connection type (56K, Jetsurf, etc), CD drive type . Give as much information as you can . What if I dont know what is causing the problem with /my operating system/software/hardware? Dont worry . Get as close as you can, Someone will be able to assist you in getting the required information as long as they have somewhere to start, but if you dont tell and you dont ask you will get a comparable reply, if any at all . Please feel free to look at this [Link] for tips on gathering information from your computer . What Have You Tried? Tell us what you have tried to fix the problem or what you have done so far to find out what you want to know . You Dont Need To Write A Book But If you can supply all of the above in succinct good English then great, you will get helpful replies . But, please do not worry if you cannot supply all the detail for now . Diagnosing computer problems are often a progressive Q & A and a process of elimination, unfortunately we can not see what you are seeing but, we have probably seen it before if you can describe it . Please avoid the use of txt, 1337 speek or other abbreviated/coded language . To help you find the information yourself and assist you to get the very best out of Press F1 click on [This Link] . There is also a very good Press F1 FAQ section at [This Link] that has common computer problems, things you could try and How Tos . Please keep your questions related to your problem in the one topic thread . If you get no answers to your problem or it does not appear to be getting resolved DO NOT start a new thread on the same problem . Just add another post in your original thread to say that you still need help, maybe you need to add or modify the information to help people understand your problem (See the above FAQ Link) . Not every problem gets solved but people here do have a good crack at what they can . Cheers Murray P et al .

2004-07-05 11:46:00 | Have you told them to make use of the search function? Nothing worse than people addressing the same issue each week because someone is too lazy to search for previous solutions. :| | kiki (762) | |
2004-07-05 11:55:00 | Thanks kiki . Yes I have in the intoductory paragraph, could do with adding in the 2nd to last paragraph as well do you think, only a few more words and a point worth labouring eh! Cheers Murray P

Ah ha! I'm going blind. :P I think it would be beneficial to reinforce the point a few more times anyway ;) |

2004-07-05 12:56:00 | I'll pop it in further down. It's a valid test of the readibility of the document if people have trouble seeing things or miss points. Different browsers, with different fonts and kerning thereof and different displays as well all add to the mytery of being able to take in lots of text and retain it. I wonder if there is another formatting option I can use to space the characters a wee bit more without braking peoples browser settings? (yoohoo, helloo admin??) Is this in postable shape, are you happy little campers, apart from the links not being quiet ready that is. Cheers Murray P

2004-07-06 10:44:00 | Hi Murray I think you need to elaborate very briefly on the search function to tell newbs to not worry about the "username or user ID . " Also, if you know how the search engine is structured, you might offer very brief advice on how to refine a search . I don't think it accepts as wide a range of search refinements as Google for example . I did ask the Mods once but there was no answer . Personally, I think search terms should be in the help files . I'll read through the whole jobbie again later and see the latest updates as i haven't gone through it for a couple of days . Cheers Billy 8-{)

2004-07-06 13:45:00 | Hi ya Billy, I have given a little search advice in the FAQ version but and have added your advice re username & ID. I think some some sections will need a little more construction work and some the chainsaw. Anyway, to keep things tidy the latest FAQ will appear below soonish. Cheers Murray P
