what i mean is that you could say the monitor computes how to display the recieved data as an image on the screen and such

249440 2004-07-03 12:10:00 You could say the noisy thing that sits under the desk, but then they may bring in the cat, or their kid.

I guess the real name is the 'case'. The CPU and HDD are components inside the case, you buy a case to put it in, so most would say that it's the case. I would also call it the box, as most seem to identify with that.

Just asked my wife what she would call it (pointed to the case) and she said "I guess it's the hard drive". There's my theory out of the window.

We have to remember that whatever the name is relates to our level of understanding. I call a car engine the motor. This means to me, nearly everything attached to it, like the coil, manifold, generator/altenator, radiator etc. If someone said "bring in the motor", I would probably take the whole bloody lot in.

249441 2004-07-03 12:45:00 Hard drive and CPU are probably the most common misnomers for the actual case itself, I tend to refer to it as the tower case or something to that effect, however for most customers it's a matter of working out what the hell they call it and refer to it as that.

Working for an ISP, the box is regularly referrred to as "the modem" by customers and the "TV" is the computer, so when you ask someone to turn the computer off thats what they do, then wonder why it's still the same after it's turned back on.

Ha! I'm sure the mechanic would love you for it .

On a side note however, an "IT specialist" that is a customer of ours was having problems getting connected, in frustration I suggested he bring the machine in after exhausting all avenues and we'd have a look as he was close by .

The guy turned up with a PCMCIA Card modem, nothing else, not the dongle, not the machine, nada . Apparently thats where the intarwebnet came in so it should be all we need .

As Jester mentioned though picking up on their nomenclature (sp?) and using it is often the best way around it - most likely they don't want to know so education is pointless .

249443 2004-07-03 13:34:00 Tut tut tut, all this time and we still don' t have a name for the so called "Box"

But im going to start calling it "System Unit" sounds more techy lol

249444 2004-07-03 20:42:00 I also call the box the system unit.

The trick is to then tell them to unplug it all at the wall for a few seconds, thats what the hp helpdesk used to get us to do when we were having major probs with our computer.
At the time I couldn't understand the reason behing pulling the plug.

249446 2004-07-03 21:38:00 Yeah i think the education resources like to call it the System Unit - I call it the Case, or the computer - but i never include the monitor in this :D Growly (6)
