249244 2004-07-02 10:39:00 I have noticed that in the past hour or so my computer has been major lagging - the reason? CPU usage is at 100%

seems that spoolsv.exe is trying to use as much CPU power as possible.

Anyone got any ideas why, and hopefully how to stop it?

249245 2004-07-02 10:44:00 Have you been using or trying to use your printer? This is what spoolsv.exe is, it spools the print job. There is a nice way of ending the spoolsv.exe which I have read about (but can't remember - someone will know tho), but a quick and dirty way of doing this is to reboot your machine. :) Jen C (20)

249247 2004-07-02 10:58:00 RESOLUTION
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system . Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly . Use Registry Editor at your own risk .
Uninstalling the BitWare software is the best course of action, but is not available for all versions .

If uninstalling is not available, you can delete all registry entries and drivers that refer to BitWare manually:
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32 . exe) .
Locate references to BitWare in the following keys in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Print\Monitors

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Print\Printers

On the Edit menu, click Delete for each BitWare subtree .
Quit Registry Editor .
Delete all BitWare drivers from the %SystemRoot%\System32\Spool\Drivers\W32x86 folder .
Restart Windows .

249248 2004-07-02 11:02:00 Were you using your printer? If not, I would do a full scan of your system with an updated AV in that case just to make sure.

I also found that thread with the nice way of killing the spooler - see here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) for Babe Ruth's post.

You shouldn't advise someone to hack their registry without providing the full information to go with that post . That hack is only if you are running BitWare Software - Link for MS Knowledge Base Article ( . microsoft . com/default . aspx?scid=kb;en-us;257859" target="_blank">support . microsoft . com)

249251 2004-07-03 03:19:00 well, i wasnt using my printer as far as i know, but at the time it started doing it (last night) i had told one of the other computers on my network to do a "network benchmark" with "fresh Diagnose". I suppose this had something to do with it, but restarting doesnt help and killing it in taskmanager doesnt either (it just comes back after a few minutes)

i have tried going into services and killing it from there but i think it came back about half an hour later.

249252 2004-07-03 13:35:00 Check there are no print jobs in the que, if there are cancel the top one which is probably hanging things up, sometimes it takes a while to go after you cancel it.
