249155 2004-07-02 03:58:00 I use IE and Outlook Ex. Started having trouble logging in to email. I go thru the modem ringing thru to the connecting stage then get an error message stating that the Host Mail (Igrin) cannot be found. It then suggests a number of possible errors, Acct name, server name, Protocol POP3, Port 110 etc. but all these are correct and have remained unchanged for several years. This is an intermittent problem, probably occuring at least 6 times out of 10 attempts, but on occasions it goes straight thru OK. I have spy-botted and adawared. I have tried with my A/Virus program disabled to no obvious advantage. I have disabled the phone working in the same room. My ISP can't offer anything new.
I usually get a 1st time connection by logging onto IE first, them "coming back" to the email. Any ideas. ?.

249156 2004-07-02 04:37:00 With OE open go to Tool/Options
Untick the box "Send and receive messages at startup"

Dialin and wait for the connection to be established and then click Send/Receive from OE Tool Bar.

249157 2004-07-02 06:12:00 Thanks for your help Jim B.

Seems to have worked, 2 out of 2 so far at least.

Can you explain the logic of this to me ?

Tks again, Rosie

249158 2004-07-02 06:49:00 There is very little logic with Windows, IE or OE
It can be completely frustrating with the changes that can be made to files uncommanded or unknown to users and there is a big swing away from using IE and OE because of the security issues that are ever present in spite of the continual updates and patches.
There are other operating systems and non Microsoft web browsers and mail programs available which do not suffer from all the continual trojan, spyware and virus problems.

Sorry - To answer your question, when check for new mail at start up is ticked Outlook Express can sometimes attempt to login to the mail server before the dialup connection is completely established causing the error message.
