249710 2004-07-04 06:42:00 Trying to set up a US Robotics ADSL Modem / Wireless router with a new Jetstream connection. Have made and checked all connections but the modem setup program is unable to detect the modem, hence can't even get as far as configuration. Using WinXP. Modem is connected via a network cable to a CNet Network card on the PC - lights on the unit indicate that that the power, ethernet and adsl connections are OK. The activity light on the network card also flashes. Have tried changing network cable, disabling firewall, changing phone cable etc - without success.

Any suggestions ...?

Thanks

249711 2004-07-04 07:08:00 You need to set up the network card first, to make sure its able to communicate with the router.

Post back all the settings obtained when you:

Go Start - Run - <type> command <enter>

That should give a DOS window.

Now type ipconfig /all
(note the space before /all)

Type exit <enter> to exit the DOS window.

249713 2004-07-04 09:47:00 What does the USR Modem manual say the factory setting is for its IP address . It will usually be somthing like 192 . 168 . 0 . 1 or 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 no other IP on your LAN can be the same .

Typical setup:

Modem/Router (Gateway) IP 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 --->>

PC LAN card (Ethernet Adaptor) IP 192 . 168 . 1 . 2

Typical TCP/IP without using DHCP:

MS windows Network Properties > TCP/IP Adapter (your LAN card)
DHCP tick box unchecked "use static DNS) . IP Address - 192 . 168 . 1 . 2 .
Subnet Mask - 255 . 255 . 255 . 0 .
DNS servers - Primary 203 . 96 . 152 . 4, Secondary 203 . 96 . 152 . 12 (paradise) .
Gateway (this is your modem/router) - 192 . 168 . 1 . 1 .

Any other computers on the network and sharing the connection will have all the same info except they will have their own TCP/IP Adapter Address, eg, 192 . 168 . 1 . 3, 192 . 168 . 1 . 4 and so on . The Gateway IP is the routers IP address and should be given in the manuals setup section (or try their website) . If for some reason the routers IP has been changed most routers have a way of resetting it to factory default settings, opten a small hole at the back which you poke a paper clip into . Check the manual or website though, you don't want a dead router .

249714 2004-07-04 12:30:00 Hi Murray P

Thanks for the advice. Default address for modem is 192.168.1.1.

Ethernet card in PC is a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet card. Tried 'repairing' the connection - this said that TCP/IP was not enabled for this connection - is this the problem? But I can't find any way of enabling it. The device appears to be connected and working OK - but only sending and not receiving.
