249881 2004-07-05 01:53:00 My brother's WinME machine has gone bum-up and can't even boot into Safe Mode (after being transported via car). He can however get into DOS and see all his directories and files. He does semi-regular backups, but the last one was a month ago, and he needs to save some recent data before he re-formats and re-installs WinME.

He doesn't have a burner, so I suggested loaning him my all-in-one DVD/CD thing (which I'm about to buy tomorrow).

So my question is... will he be able to install and use the drive, and then copy his My Documents contents to the drive's media with just DOS commands?

249882 2004-07-05 03:35:00 hm.......I *think* so .......maybe......so long as you boot using say a win98 boot floppy and take the 'start with cdrom support' choice......otherwise and before you try that try this: Boot usign a boot floppy and get into 'dos'.......then type c: and tap enter this'll take you 'into' c drive, (if you are not already there k). then type in: cd windows .....then hit enter. Then type in: cd command ......then hit enter.......now you need to type in: scanreg /restore then hit enter you should then be presented with about 5 choices of registry to restore back to. These represent saved copies of the registry from previous boots. Pick one using the arrow keys then hit enter and let the machine do it's stuff......after that use the reset button to restart the puter 'normally' and cross your fingers........LUCK drcspy (146)
249883 2004-07-05 03:40:00 Thx Dr. "restore" was tried and didn't help. But... he now says he's managed to copy his data from drive C to his second hard drive - so problem solved.

Thanks!

249884 2004-07-05 03:46:00 drcspy avoids the difficult bit - how does he burn a CD in DOS. (That was the question, as I understood it?)

Recognising the CD drive is one thing, but that will not give access to the burning features.

Try this:

Great link. Hope I never have to do that.

I mildly wonder if it could be done in XP

249888 2004-07-05 03:56:00 ps - drcspy also an important bit - there's apparent damage to the disk platter surface I guess, as the probs only occured after the machine being transported. My guess is that the disk surface must have been touched by the head during transit, and it's screwed the o/s somehow.

I wonder.. where does the head lie in relation to the disk's radius while it's in a power-off stage - and what portion of the disk holds C and it's contents? Life's mysteries to me! lol

249889 2004-07-05 03:57:00 Theoretically in the newer pcs' the system 'parks' the read head.......much older systems you actually had to type in the 'park' command drcspy (146)
249890 2004-07-05 03:59:00 check what type of hdd you have Ie: seagate/western digital etc etc......then goto the maker site and download their diagnostic prog you'll find it with a small amount of looking.......when you've downloaded it plop a floppy into your puter and double clik the program and it'll write to the floppy then put the floppy into the dud ptuer and boot with it........then run the diagnostic that'll tell you if it is indeed stuffed drcspy (146)
