250263 2004-07-06 07:16:00 Hard drive with WinXP could not be accessed ( No obvious cause but happened after I installed a new motherboard with SATA drives - this IDE drive stopped reading.)

I reinstalled Windows (on a new SATA drive)and then tried to access the original drive ; setting up first as slave on IDE Channel 2 and then as Master drive.
In both cases the BIOS recognises the drive correctly BUT WinXP will not boot with this drive in the system.
I have tried also with reinstalling WinXP on a normal IDE drive but again BIOS recognises but Windows will not boot if this drive is connected.
I need the data and promise I will back it up if I get it back !

250264 2004-07-08 02:25:00 Umm. ;-)

I don't know XP, or SATA.

Why doesn't XP (on the other IDE) boot with this drive present? Is it wanting to be reauthorised because there's a new HD which wasn't there when it was installed? That seems a bit extreme. ;-)

The SATA might be behaving like SCSI and needing "no" IDE drives set in the BIOS, but I thought that sort of thing had been fixed in the new BIOSs, and yoiu could just set any order of any sort of HD.

If this doesn't provoke a more useful response you could try using one of the "Live CD" versions of Linux, like Knoppix, Morphix, etc. They have been on magazine covers recenly (even PC World NZ), but if you haven't got one of them, you could get XC4034 from Dick Smith for $6.95 . Try formatting the IDE drive you installed XP on as VFAT (FAT32) so Linux can write to it. You should be able to copy all the data of the odd drive to a VFAT one (the NTFS for Linux will read but not write). Then your SATA system should be able to access it.
